Congressional Autism Hearings, 11/29Take Action!Be There, Be Heard, Take Action The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform chaired by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-California) will hold the first hearing in more than a decade regarding the federal response to autism on Thursday, November 29th at 2:00 pm, in the Rayburn House Office Building, Room

2154. Autism Action Network will be focusing on these hearings as a way to pressure Congress to take the autism epidemic seriously and begin a federal response commensurate with the

scope of the public health catastrophe we are suffering. We will be asking you to take a series of actions to pressure your Representatives to attend the hearing, respond appropriately and change the wholly inadequate federal response to the epidemic. The first thing you can do is to click on the Take Action Link above to send your Representative an email informing them of the hearing and asking them to attend. And then please take the very important step of forwarding this email to friends and family and sharing it on Facebook and other social networks and asking them to click on the Take Action Link and send their Representative an email. We don’t have

million-dollar lobbyists, we don’t have a deep pocket PAC to throw money around Washington, but we do have you, people impacted by autism and dedicated to doing something about it. And

the more of us who act and the more persistent we are in pressuring elected officials the closer we will get to where we need to be. We will be sending you a sequence of emails about the hearing asking you to take a series of actions. We realize not everybody can do all of them, but everybody can do some of them, and what you do matters. Here's what we will be asking you to do over the next couple of weeks: Call, write or fax your Representative. We will be sending you an email tomorrow with the contact information for your Representative. Contacting your representative is especially important if he or she is a member of the Committee on Oversight and Government

Reform. We will be sending an email just to those members of the Autism Action Network whose Representatives are on the Committee. Attend the hearing if

possible. Bring your child or children if you can. Let's try to make the hearing "standing room only". Be visible. If you are going to Washington, ask for an office meeting, before or after the hearing, to talk about your family's needs and concerns. Or meet with them Thanksgiving week when they are home in your district. Remember they work for you and this is the first time in 10 years that Congress has provided oversight of autism activities. Encourage them to get involved in the House Autism Caucus long term. Ask your Representative to make sure this is the first of many hearings investigating autism and affiliated issues. We

don't just want attention, we want solutions! This is especially critical if your Representative is on the committee. We need new champions to carry on after Congressman Dan

Burton retires. Individuals and organizations are able to submit written testimony to the hearing. If you are a member of a local autism organization, encourage them to participate by submitting a written statement. Statements become part of the formal record of the hearing. To submit testimony, you may fax it directly to the Committee at . Ask C-Span to televise the hearing. Call and politely ask that they televise the hearing on C-Span 3 which covers hearings.
