Guest guest
Kate, First of all, I am no doctor, just a patient. The problem with PSC is that there is realy no way of predicting what will happen. There are people on this forum that basically got a transplant because the itching was driving them nuts. Others go through the works (fatigue, jaundice, nausea, itching, RUQ pain, chills and fevers, ascites, varices, enlarged spleen, HE, liver failure, kidney failure) and then transplant. Some people never get to transplant because of bile duct cancer (CCA). Others get transplanted due to the CCA. Someone who writes on this forum for quite a while told me once that of all the people on this forum who were elligible for transplant there has never been anyone that died before getting the transplant. Cirrhosis can cause portal hypertension, which can cause varices, which can cause an enlarged spleen. It can also cause liver failure which can cause most of the other symptoms between the brackets above. Your husband can get all of them, some of them, one of them, or none whatsoever. There is no way to know. The symptoms that people complain most about on this forum are itching, fatigue, RUQ pain and varices. HE happens less but is serious indeed. In Israel the rule is that you can apply for transplant when your quality of life is poor due to the reduced function of the liver. I don't really know what the UNOS rules are. I am sure someone else can fill you in on that.
