It's not that well known, but in California, and perhaps a few other states, if taking time off to care for a close family member (parent, spouse, child), you can receive paid family leave from the State. FTDI is funded through employee payroll deductions to State Disability Insurance. The estimated average cost is $27 per worker per year, divided between your monthly, biweekly or weekly pay period.

If you do not see an SDI deduction on your pay stub, ask your employer or human resources representative if you are covered by the SDI program.

You may request a claim form online or by phone. Claim forms cannot be downloaded or faxed.

Overview

Covered employers must grant an eligible employee up to a total of 12

workweeks of unpaid leave during any 12-month period for one or more

of the following reasons:

for the birth and care of the newborn child of the employee;

for placement with the employee of a son or daughter for adoption or

foster care;

to care for an immediate family member (spouse, child, or parent)

with a serious health condition; or

to take medical leave when the employee is unable to work because of

a serious health condition.
