I’ll try and be brief, I need help figuring out

what’s going on.

Ken got his labs drawn on 7/2. The results showed he was anemic. So Baylor decided to give Ken 2 units of PRBC (Packed red blood cells)

which they did on 7/9. I assumed (I

know, I know, mistake #3 on my part) that Baylor was checking his INR as we had

been there twice in 2 weeks and they did labs both times. Yesterday we went to our local lab to

get his blood rechecked (6 days after the 2 units of blood). The nurse calls us in a panic, Ken’s INR is 7.1! The doctor gets on the phone and tells

us to call Baylor. We do……their

advice is to stop Coumadin for 3 days and Friday get his INR done again . OK, that’s easy enough, no problem.

But……..here’s my question, what’s

up with his current labs? I was expecting

them to be much better after the 2 units of blood.

Bilirubin up from 1.1 to 2.4

Alt up from 99 to 158

AST up from 93 to 227

ALK PHOS up from 373 to 686

RBC 3.12 up to 3.40

HGB 8.0 up to 8.5

HCT 26.1 up to 26.9

Shouldn’t we expect the results (after 2 pints

of blood) to be much better? I’m

wondering if he isn’t bleeding somewhere (certainly a big possibility

with an INR of 7.1) and that bleeding caused the anemia in the first place? He’s going to do an occult stool

test, is there some other way of finding out of he’s bleeding? No vomiting, no black tarry stools or

red blood seen.

Thanks in advance for any help offered,

Barb in Texas
