From the Chair: IAFC and Masimo Unveil Regional Educational Programs for

NFPA 1584 Guidance Report

v09-205h.jpg> The EMS Section was proud work with the Masimo Corporation

to publish the NFPA 1584 Guidance Report that all IAFC members received

free by mail. The book details best practices for the 2008 NFPA 1584

standard for rehabbing and medically monitoring firefighters during

emergency operations. Supplemental resources are available on the EMS

website on the Resources

http://www.iafc.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=819#nfpa1584>

webpage.

The Masimo Corporation is now offering free regional training seminars

on implementing the best practices. I strongly encourage you to take

advantage of this free training. Strong evidence points to firefighters

having cardiac events after strenuous work periods or high exposure to

carbon monoxide during overhaul operations. With half of all firefighter

deaths each year resulting from a cardiac event, it's a great

opportunity to learn how to properly rehab and medically monitor

firefighters to reduce deaths.

The first class was rolled out at the Memphis Fire Department training

center on November 20, and over 102 individuals from 22 departments

participated. Randolph Mantooth, who played the firefighter/paramedic

ny Gage on the television show Emergency!, and well-known EMS

author-speaker Dr. Bledsoe taught the class.

To arrange for the class to be held in your area or to find out where

it's being offered, call e at .
