Guest guest
My daughter will be going to middle school next year. I have not heard anything good at this point about the current programs in broward county. I have heard the county is concentrating on improving them. My concern for my daughter is safety. In a middle school setting my main concern is her being alone in the bathrooms, lunchtime, and recess. In elementary school she did not have a para at these times.. In middle school I have concerns about her being easy prey. I would really appreciate any input.... Cherilyn Levy
Guest guest
Dear Cherilyn,Contrary to what you may have heard, there are actually lots of parents happy, or at least not unhappy, with the public middle school programs for their autistic kids; it's the unhappy ones we hear most about! My own son, and others, had a great experience at Sawgrass Springs. If safety is an issue (and isn't it always?) talk to the school about your concerns, and make sure provisions are made in her IEP. Many of the schools now have some type of "buddy" program, where a typical peer is designated to be a lunch buddy. I don't think any of the middle schools have recess any more? (Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong) so that may be one less thing to worry about.Regards, To: sList Sent: Wednesday, November 14, 2012 7:04 AM Subject: Middle School My daughter will be going to middle school next year.
