The xifaxan does't do the job alone for HE. > Becky Steffanic ===================== Hi Becky -- Initially my dr. put me on lactulose for the HE. It helped, but not nearly enough. He then switched me from lactulose to xifaxan which has worked like a charm for me. When the HE feels like it's getting worse, we simply increase my Xifaxan dosage a bit and that has worked well for us. I know I'm on a pretty low dose (2 tablets a day) and the normal dose is 6 tablets a day. Perhaps that would work for your hubby? I've not heard of anyone being on both drugs at once. The lactulose keeps you so tied to the bathroom that I was delighted when we switched to the Xifaxan. For all the newbies out there -- Xifaxan also apparently has the potential to kick Crohn's into remission. In a study done at Cornell, 52% of Crohn's patients went into remission (at a dosage of 6 tablets per day). I went into remission at 1 tablet a day, and now -- at 2 per day -- my colonoscopy last month showed no active Crohn's disease, and -- in a stunning development -- no scarring whatsoever!!!! We consider xifaxan to be our miracle drug. Regards, Carolyn B. in SC

My husband asked the doctor if he could just take > Hi Becky: My husband is on 6 Xifaxan a day plus lactulose at least twice a day. If he doesn't get at least 2 30 ml doses of lactulose he slips into obvious HE and I have to increase the lactulose accordingly. He's been hospitalized 4 times in 8 months for HE and I've learned how much he needs depending on his symptoms. Last week we went to every 2 hours during the day then to every 3 hours - now he's up to every 4 hrs which is about where he needs to be. If he skips a couple of doses he's right back to where we have to increase it again. Our GI said to go every 4 hrs then titrate as needed. I have to stay right on top of it because he forgets to take that and the rest of his meds also.
