I'm not sure what procedure you're referring to here, but it sounds most

like a TIPS (Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt) where a

stent is inserted in the liver to divert some of the blood flow that is

causing the high blood pressure in the portal vein. It's that high

blood pressure that causes the varices. So if all goes as planned, it

should indeed cause the varices to go away, or at least stop them from

forming and enlarging. They discussed doing this for me when I had a

variceal bleed, but they decided to manage it through banding instead.

There are some potential problems with the TIPS procedure: The stent

can get blocked and stop doing it's job.... if that happens the varices

will probably come back. Also, since some blood is essentially

bypassing the liver and not being filtered by it, some liver disease

symptoms (like hepatic encephalopathy) can be made worse. Neither of

these are guaranteed though, just things to watch for.

So I guess bottom line is that TIPS (if that is indeed what they did)

should do what they said unless something goes wrong with it.

Hopefully that helps! I know from my own experience that this can be

very scary and worrying, but I'm sure it's even worse to have a child

going through these things than it was for me to go through them myself!

ph,

I am sorry to hear about your daughters

diagnose, but I am happy you found us. This site is quite helpful in order to

find information you need and finding support we all need.

I am not sure if there are people in Austin

Tx, but there are some people of Texas

in this group. One of them posts a lot and I am sure you will hear from her

soon. Her adult son had his transplant at Baylor in Dallas.

What you are describing sounds like

banding varices. I don't have experience with that, but I am sure people will

answer you soon about that as well.

Please look at the website below for more

information on that and many more PSC related subjects.

Subject: Stints,

Varices, Transplant

Hospitals and

Heptologists??

My 19 year old daughter has PSC and UC for the past 2

years...it took

11/2 years to daignose. She is having surgery today to have a stint

put into? her liver?? Sorry this has all come very suddenly so I am

not sure exactly what they are doing? She was doing fine and on Friday

started to vomit blood. They discovered 2 varices in her stomach.

Yesterday one of them burst, so today they are doing surgery, putting

the stint in??

My questions are?

1. Does any one out there live in Austin Texas have PSC, it would sure

help having someone around.

2. Also, if that someone lives in Austin

we are looking for a good

Gastro/haptologist in the area??

3. Does anyone know what the best Transplant

Hospital is in the South,

someone said the Methodist Hospital in Houston??

4. How long will the stints help for?? She has not eaten since

Thursday?? Will the varices subside on there own after the surgery as

they are saying that is the way to treat them??

Sorry for all the quetions but I am besides myself with worry.
