Lift all metal crowns to check underneath. Yes, when they put mercury in the root it is called an appecectomy. It is just about the worst thing that can be done. Root canals are toxic no matter what - it is just the degree of toxicity and the state of the immune system that decides 'how' ill you will get from it. Combine that with mercury and it is no fun. For those of you not progressing with chelation, look at cavitation and root canals. I have seen it make more difference than anything when cleared and the effects are near instant.
