Transitions: A Holistic Approach

Change is hard. Although change is one fact of life on which we can always count, that does not make the transition from the comfortable and familiar to that which is new and scary any easier. This is true for people of all different backgrounds and personalities, and can be especially true for individuals with disabilities.

For many young adults, going to college is an exciting next step in their educational and life journey. It is a time when the young adult gets to take a step forward in making day-to-day decisions while their parents begin to take a step back. It is often a surprise, though, for students who are entering post-secondary life excited about the chance to be an independent adult to find out just how challenging all of the responsibilities of living independently can be.

The Journey into the World of Work

Mathew came to CLE Rockville two years ago after struggling at a university close to home. It wasn't that Mat lacked the ability to do the work; it was that he was unable to manage his time and duties while living on his own. Mat has come a long way in two years and now, on the verge of completing his associate's degree, he begins his transition into the world of work.

Currently, Mat lives in his own apartment, takes classes on the Rockville campus of Montgomery College, and has earned a paid internship with the Department of Finance for Montgomery County in Rockville, MD. Mat is lucky; his internship, classes and apartment are all within walking distance of CLE.

Celebrating Success for the Future with a Degree in Hand

When CLE Denver student, Caroline, was asked about the transition to life after CLE, she stated that it will be "pretty exciting." "I have mixed feelings as I have made a lot of friends with students at CLE and outside of CLE, as well as meaningful relationships with staff. However, I am excited to move on," says Caroline.

Caroline is now preparing for the transition back to her home state of California. During her time at CLE Denver, Caroline has earned a certificate from Griffith Technical College in Culinary Arts, and inDecember, she will earn her AA degree in Applied Science from the Community College of Denver.
