Guest guest
Today we got the MRI results from the hematologist. The previous MRI (4/15/08) showed one very large diffuse clot in the portal vein. Today's results, however, say: " There is EXTENSIVE extrahepatic portal venous, proximal left and right intrahepatic main portal venous as well as central splenic and superior mesenteric venous thrombosis. " Also, " there are areas of increased signal axial precontrast images without obvious enhancement on the post contrast images. The finding likely represents blood products of varying ages within the main right and left portal veins. " Also, my splenomegaly has now gone from " mild " to " prominent " with measurements of 17 cm X 6 cm X 14 cm. Liver demonstrates multisegmental areas of obstruction .... " the left hepatic lobe is quite severely affected " .... with much of the right lobe affected as well. Hematologist wants to begin a major anticoagulation therapy, but it must wait until my dental work is complete (I broke a tooth while eating scrambled eggs this weekend.) QUESTIONS -- I know of others in this group who have clots in the portal vein. Has anyone gone from one clot to multiple, extensive clots at all (much less within just a few weeks)?? Are we likely to see the clots to continue multiplying like this? If the whole blood supply back to the liver gets bogged down with all these clots, how can circulation continue circulating???? (Yes, the report does mention inferior mesenteric venous collaterals are noted, but is that enough?? Thanks for any and all input (and, most of all, for all the prayers and messages I've been receiving!) Regards, Carolyn B. in SC
