Guest guest
Although we never used PECS for my son's vocabulary/communication (they did at school) we began to keep a picture schedule for him. My son really thrived with it. It was a visual way to keep track of his day. He had so much anxiety about where we were going and what was next. He was constantly saying " where are we going now? " " what are we doing next? " over and over again. I made my own schedule (with the advice of his teacher) and velcroed it to the fridge. I used pictures with words underneath. I even took pictures of his therapists and used them on his schedule. It was portable so when he was really anxious we took it with us wherever we went so he could keep a visual check on what was next. I have tons and tons of pictures - alot of them are pecs and a lot I scanned in from books, magazines, photos, etc. It helped him so much to have his day layed out visually before him. He used it intensely for about 6-8 months. After that he didn't need as much information on it like; eat dinner, brush teeth, read book, go to bed..sometimes up to 15 activities. So I only put up pictures of the main events (ie: school, OT...2-3 activities). Then, his anxiety level dropped even more and he started processing verbal information better and no longer sought out his picture schedule at all. If anyone wants info on the schedules (I think there was a website I hit), I will dig it up and send it to the list. Or maybe others have more info on them they could share.
