Guest guest
, During my career, I took FMLA several times or was at least " on the books " for it. The first time was when my DH had to have surgery; I only missed one day (the actual surgery) but until he was released, I would have been covered by the FMLA act, using my vac for the pay. I also used it for the 2 weeks I was off when my daughter had her tonsils out (same year as DH, 1 week later) - so I had 2 claims going and had to let the HR person know who it was for and how many hours. Then I had to use it for me when I came down with bronchitis. I went out on short-term disability (but was still protected by FMLA), then it switched to long-term disability and finally my FMLA ran out. I am still on LTD, doing the social security dance - waiting for the hearing actually as I have been turned down twice. My suggestion for your DH is to get onto the FMLA. Each company is different but I know the one I worked for had a worksheet that the employee filled out so they would know if any FMLA hours were used (as there is a total of 12 wks per yr). Some companies force you to use vacation and/or sick leave to cover that time lost and with six of you in the hh, well, you probably can't afford him to NOT have his full pay. I would see if there was someone who you could hire, even on a part- time basis to help you with everything. The older kids are in school so it would be the littles you'd need the most help with. If you are involved in a church, could you check with them to see if they have a ministry that helps? We have " hands extended " which will do everything from bring out a meal to clean if that's what is needed. Just a thought. I have considered seeing if any teen girl has a need to make a little extra money by coming in and cleaning my house once a week.
