Guest guest
Debra, Girl you need to STOP THAT!!!!! If you take Lyrica then yes! Some of the side effects of Lyrica is difficulty swallowing. Are you hurting this morning, other than probably being sorer from all the horrible coughing? I hope you are better today, but write me back! Debra B I was choking on popcorn.. anyone else with this problem???? Morning my friends. I just got up and woke up earlier than usual. I was hurting and my stomach is upset and have terrible allergies making my stomach sick from the post nasal drip.. Sorry. And I feel like a pile of crapola. Anyway, a question. I choked last night on some popcorn. A piece of it went into my trachea and I think into my lung. OUCH. I coughed and coughed so hard I was turning purple... scared my little 6 year old too. My husband who is usually not very interested in anything about how I feel, got alarmed. He ran over there hollaring " are you Ok " ? Well, I never completely shut off my airway and after about 5 minutes of horrible deep coughing it came up I think. It was a very tiny piece luckily. MY Question- Do any of you notice at times that you don't swallow the right way????????? ????????? ????????? ?? I believe that this fibro or whatever it is interferes with my swallowing muscles. I find that almost everyday I almost choke on something like soda, a piece of food, or my own saliva. It is not everytime I eat or drink, but is happening more and more frequent. Last night was the most severe and the closest I have come to really cutting off my airway. Hubby of course ran over and started hitting me on the back. (not the right thing to do but he was trying to help). DO YOU THINK THIS BEAST OF A DISEASE affects our swallowing at times? Of course, the heimlich maneuver whould have been the thing to do IF I stopped moving air. I was still moving air of course because I was coughing. love and hugs, Debra V. ____________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Guest guest
FM does cause problems with swallowing, solids and liquids both can be a problem and the difficulty seems to go in cycles. Also like you mentioned, swallowing becomes difficult when tired, fatiqued, shortly after waking or just before dropping off to sleep. Chocolate at one time was a major problem, my throat would completely close and I was unable to breathe for a few seconds. It is important to remain calm during these moments, in my case I was already aware of what would happen and that the occurance would pass in a short time. If this is a new change, make sure and let your doctor know. Be cautious when eating or drinking, make sure and chew any food properly to avoid " Big Chunks " that may not go down without difficulty. Guest guest
Oh geez, Debra. That sounds awful. I suppose FM could affect your swallowing muscles. I think you should get this checked out if it continues. It's too scary to ignore. I get pills stuck on something in the back of my throat. The little ones will get stuck and I can't get them to go down unless I swallow some food or a larger pill. I can't understand what they get caught up on. My family thinks my tonsils, but that doesn't seem right. It feels right in the center of the throat, like where the epiglottis is. Know I probably spelled that wrong. That's what the flap is called that blocks the trachia when we swallow, right? Anyway, I hope your swallowing trouble goes away. Take care. Jeanne in WI Morning my friends. Guest guest
I seem to do the aspirating thing more... like water, soda.... not so much choking solids. In my case I figured it had to do with the hiatal hernia and meds I take associated with it. I vaguely remember some doctor telling me the part of the esophagus that closes off one part to let the other part open can sometimes be affected; but I can't for the life of me remember if it was a med he was talking about or a condition. Guest guest
PEANUTS!!!!!!! I remembered, I can't eat them at all anymore - I always choke on them. I don't eat them very often anyway so it wasn't a big loss. So I guess it could be the Lyrica. and/or the Fibro. and/or the hiatal hernia. and/or the GERD.... who the heck knows... Guest guest
Yeah, Angie it is a little scary. Of course I have not had that happen today at all. It is just once about every day or so that it happens. But that alone is more than most normal people would experience choking. I usually start coughing before it gets as far as that piece of popcorn did last night. I really seriously think this disease is like a silent kind of MS. We have so many symptoms that are the same. I notice my limbs or hands or feet jerking involuntarily at times. It has gotten to the point that I can be almost asleep and my right arm will just jerk out to the side for no reason. Completely involuntary action. love and hugs, Debra V. Guest guest
Yeah, that is because they have no idea what they are really dealing with here. They would rather just lay some symptoms off to our imagination if they don't know how to explain it. Oh and I also get an electrical shock in my hands sometimes when I pick up an object that weights a pound or so or when I am using my hands for some kind of fine motor skill. It is as if someone put my finger in an electrical socket. It only happens in my hands so far. love and hugs, Debra V. Guest guest
I have had a number of incidents of feeling as if I am about to choke and it does vary with what I am eating! Sometimes I try to use an inhaler to relieve the feeling that there is something caught in my throat --- and it has happened when we have been eating out a few times. Will have to start paying more attention and keep a record of how often it happens. Certainly is not a good felling!!!! > > From: Angie > Subject: Re: I was choking on popcorn.. anyone else with this problem???? > To: Fibromyalgia_ Support_Group@ yahoogroups. com > Date: Sunday, May 11, 2008, 3:24 PM > > I seem to do the aspirating thing more... like water, soda.... not so much choking solids. Guest guest
I actually experience this a lot... I'll go to swallow and I feel like the food or drink gets stuck (for lack of a better word) right where my neck meets my chest. Coughing does not help... I just have to wait for it to settle down. For a long time they told me this was from my acid reflux, but I learned last week that it is from the fibromyalgia. They actually have a name for this " symptom " ... it is called esophagal dismotility... (sorry if it's mis-spelled) > > Morning my friends. I just got up and woke up earlier than usual. Guest guest
Debra, I have the electric shock in my hands as well. I can be picking something up or doing nothing and it hits. My Neurologists " told me " it was carpal-tunnel.....I don't know that I believe him or not now. I really don't think they truly know how this effects us now or in the future and that IS scary!!!!!! If we have trouble swallowing, shocks in our hands etc and they " blame " it on something else will this eventually effect our internal organs????????? They don't know and there is NOT enough research on this illness being done. Billions of dollars are wasted each year by the government and private sectors on surveys and other research that really don't mean anything to anyone. It's sad and really scary!! Maybe we all need to charter a bus and all go to Washington and demand something be done for us! Debra B I was choking on popcorn.. anyone else with this problem???? Morning my friends. Guest guest
Like the swallowing process is incomplete, stops in mid cycle and the food has to slide past the area on its own accord.

I had it badly until I got my reflux treated. It was like food wouldn't go the rest of the way down. Only a doc can tell the difference, and reflux is nothing to fool around with. Guest guest
I've always had to wash down my food - meaning I have to drink when I eat. Otherwise I feel like I'm choking, I get the hiccups, etc. I've done that for as long as I can remember. My parents used to try that nothing to drink until you eat your food and it never worked with me because if I didn't have something to drink I couldn't eat more than 3 bites of food. I know my older brother is the same way, I don't know about my younger brother. Guest guest
Ok, I guess I sort of have this too. I haven't actually choked but I can feel everything I swallow. I tried to explain it to the doc when I first started flaring. The first thing he did was treat me for the reflux. I took the meds at first but had told him I had acid reflux a long time ago and this wasn't it. I notice it most when I'm flaring up. But I also notice it when I'm tensing up. Does everyone else's chest burn up when they are flaring? That's where mine starts. I feel like one of those horror flicks. The one where the demon is coming out of their chest and the red fire spreads to their outstretched arms. I even have to put my head back just to help releave it a little. I doubt that even a demon would want this body. No wonder he's trying to get out. Jan > > I actually experience this a lot...
