Guest guest
Thanks for the info on your experience with the mentioned. My worry is since I have been on the hydrocodone/ Vicodine Es, and Percocet for night time pain as the other if taken at HS it will not let me get back to sleep, and since these are no longer doing a full job, it has been discussed with me going to a stronger narcotic, which would be the oxcycontin, or Methadone. I guess my fear even though used properly there will be a time you become dependant not addicted to any narcotic after time, I am dependent which is different as I don't get high off of these when taken , never have, but in due time I would like to think I can come off of any pain med, though my Dr. believes I am probably one of the few, who may have to live on a narcotic the rest of my life as she has known of a few Fibro suffer's, who have had to go to this and except without pain medication they can not function, get through a day. I have visited the ER several times on top of these med's I am on as the pain get's this out of control that I need to get a shot, and then am completley bedridden for a week with my back. So as I think of going to these stronger oxcycontin or Methadone I know the day I would want to come off or was told possible by another I needed to come off, the withdrawel will be very difficult there is no avoiding this from these drugs. Yes the vicodin liver issue is as you said, and no there is none in the oxcycontin, I believe this is why I need to make a choice. The woman I know that was given the ocxy, after back surgery didn't take it PRN she took it daily x2 a day for a month while recovering, and in that short time switching to a lower narcotic she had horrible withdrawel, and this does happen this quick. I now live 3 hrs from my Dr. so would not be able to go monthly, and if I choose to go to the next narcotic, I will be visiting the Pain Clinic for them. I don't know what to do, but thanks again for your explaination and the site. I also worry about the resperation part of it as I have sleep apnea and wear the machine at night but don't always sleep at night and fall asleep at various times, so keep thinking on these that I will stop breathing, I know case of parinoia, but have worked in the healthfied all my life and as a Med Tech also and have seen some scary things. Hope these continue to do the job for you,as would love to be able to say this. Take Care. Sharon J tracy9j@...> wrote: Thanks, Sharon. You can pick your friends but you can't pick your family. As for the Oxycontin: I'm not sure why everyone is so afraid of this drug. From all the things I've read about it, if used the way it is supposed to be used, it can be a very safe drug. Here is a link to a website call RX List and you can find important information about all kinds of meds. http://www.rxlist.com/script/main/hp.asp Here's the link for Oxycontin. http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/oxycontin.htm I think Oxycontin gets all the bad press when it's used incorrectly. Also, you mention that someone you know was given it after surgery and from what I understand, that shouldn't ever be done. Here's the warning: (begin) WARNING: OxyContin is an opioid agonist and a Schedule II controlled substance with an abuse liability similar to morphine. Oxycodone can be abused in a manner similar to other opioid agonists, legal or illicit. This should be considered when prescribing or dispensing OxyContin in situations where the physician or pharmacist is concerned about an increased risk of misuse, abuse, or diversion. OxyContin Tablets are a controlled-release oral formulation of oxycodone hydrochloride indicated for the management of moderate to severe pain when a continuous, around-the-clock analgesic is needed for an extended period of time. OxyContin Tablets are NOT intended for use as a prn analgesic. OxyContin 80 mg and 160 mg Tablets ARE FOR USE IN OPIOID-TOLERANT PATIENTS ONLY. These tablet strengths may cause fatal respiratory depression when administered to patients not previously exposed to opioids. OxyContin TABLETS ARE TO BE SWALLOWED WHOLE AND ARE NOT TO BE BROKEN, CHEWED, OR CRUSHED. TAKING BROKEN, CHEWED, OR CRUSHED OxyContin TABLETS LEADS TO RAPID RELEASE AND ABSORPTION OF A POTENTIALLY FATAL DOSE OF OXYCODONE. (END) The reason I started taking it was for the pain waking me up at night. So, my doctor and I decided to try this because it works for 12 hours. It has helped me immensely. I sleep through the night and then it works all day. I DO have break-through pain once in a while so for that, I take a 10/500 hydrocodone/apap. At my new dose, I have only had to take a hydrocodone once in the last 5 days. It's my understanding, the part of the Vicodin that is dangerous to your liver is the acetaminophen in each pill. There is no acetaminophen, to my knowlege, in Oxycontin. Anyway, only you and your doctor should decide what's best. There are other drugs out there that can do the same thing and may work better for you. Maybe your doctor could look into it if you are concerned about the Oxycontin. I see my doctor regularly every month to keep up on how things are going and how the meds are working. That's about all I can tell you about my experience with Oxycintin for my Fibro pain management. Re: Misc reponses Hi - I am so sorry you had a mother who could be that cruel, while you took care of her?, Anyway I wanted to ask you about the oxcycontin, as I am headed that way, I have held off, because I am semi afraid of it, I was a med tech, when I worked and I pretty much know all my med's, so I along with the world because of the street bums selling it at no worry to themselves as long as they get the big buck, and are killing many a person including the childeren. But I want to know when you first started does it snow you on top of taking the pain away? I am on the vicodin ES right now, have been for yrs., and have had percocet for break through at night, as the other if I take it does not let me sleep, and I get pain through the night, which has become almost every night now!!, sometime almost go to the ER for a shot bad, but don't want to deal with the anxiety of the whole trip there when I know if I could just go over and get in and out quick would be ok, but you know the ER's. So the other thing is I know person's who was given the oxcycontin after surgery and when they stopped, it was a nightmare coming off, my Dr. belives in the Fibro, and believes we should not have to endure pain, and thinks I am one of the ones who will have to take pain med's for the rest of my life she has seen this, but I need to go to the Pain Clinic for the stronger pill, and this also makes me anxious, I don't want to go through all the new stuff again, I hate new patient visits, but if you think the oxcycontin helps that much I may think more of going, as I don't want to get on it unless I hear from otheres that the relief good, as I have to take large doses of anything, and this scares me, but I am on 6-8 vicodin ES a day and I know the liver can get involved and wonder now where it is on me, I come from a family of poorer livers to begin with. Guest guest
Sharon, I wrote before that I had withdrawal when I ran out of pain meds recently. However, I have come off of Oxycontin and Morphine after being on it for up to 6 months and went back to a lower pain med and did not experience any withdrawal. I think my withdrawal came from percocet not the Opiods. I can understand your fear of suppressed respirations. It really concerns me also.....
