Guest guest
hi marti, how much ritalin have you been on? have you upped the dose over the years? i read somewhere that we " become addicted " to these stimulants over time because of a real physical reason...our brains stop making the receptors for dopamine, when we take stimulants orally, so we need higher doses to get the same benefit. so we are really addicts, there is a real physical reason for needing higher doses. but all the docs refuse to write rxs for me for higher doses and i can't tolerate provigil. have you ever tried concerta or adderral? thanks, marg
Guest guest
Marg, The definition of being addicted to and having a physical dependency are VERY different. You are not an addict. Your body has built up a tolerance and you will probably have to be weaned off it carefully if come off because of your bodies dependency. Addiction is where you psychologically HAVE to HAVE the drug and figure out ways to get more. That's when the criminal element kicks in. See the difference? Don't let anyone treat you like an addict.....you deserve better. I have heard when you build up a tolerence that you should try a new med..... Jill ritalin...for marti hi marti, how much ritalin have you been on? have you upped the dose over the years? i read somewhere that we " become addicted " to these stimulants over time because of a real physical reason...our brains stop making the receptors for dopamine, when we take stimulants orally, so we need higher doses to get the same benefit. so we are really addicts, there is a real physical reason for needing higher doses. but all the docs refuse to write rxs for me for higher doses and i can't tolerate provigil. have you ever tried concerta or adderral? thanks, marg
Guest guest
Hi Marg, I have taken Ritalin SA for probably 15 or more years and never upped the dose, except at the very beginning when my psychiatrist and I were starting low and deciding what the correct dose would be. I have never found that it stopped working and never needed to ask for more. I wouldn't want to take more because this is a normal dose and most people don't go up on it who have AADD. It continues to work. I take the generic and take 20mg twice a day, once when I get up and another in early afternoon. It is a different type of stimulant than say amphetamines. I get no high or any other " feeling " from it. I'm just able to focus some better. I have taken the same amount of Provigil for the many years I've taken it too. It also gives me no " feeling " and just helps me not to fall asleep while driving or in mid sentence. I have narcolepsy and before taking Provigil I did fall asleep at the wheel once. Thank God I did wake up as I was veering over. I learned to notice signals that told me when it was going to happen so I could pull over. The Provigil has saved my life and kept me from appearing drunk in social situations where I would fall asleep in the middle of something. . Like I have said about all the meds I take, if I'm addicted I don't know because I take them everyday. I do know that they are ones the doctor has told me not to just stop, but to wean off of, and so I make sure I don't run out of them. He's told me not to just stop or run out of my psych meds. Synthroid, Singulair and my blood pressure medication too. I just try to make sure I don't run out of anything so I don't have any reactions. No, I've never taken Concerta or Adderal. The other meds give me no side effects and work just fine so there's no reason not to take them or to try something new. Provigil has even showed in research to be helpful for people with Fibromyalgia.
