Guest guest
Poor Debi. I hate that for you. NO, the commercial does not tell even 1/4 of the true story. It is getting me annoyed. Debi, Can you not get a shower chair? There are little white stools that you can set in the shower and sit on. I didn't have one when I had my knee replacements, but I used a wooden four-legged stool covered by a trash bag. I also had handicapped rails installed some years ago: a horizontal one on the side of the tub, and a vertical one where I can grasp it to step into the tub. Even though I no longer have as bad mobility issues, and am no longer super morbidly obese, I still grasp that vertical rail when I get in and out. I also use a bath mat so I don't slip. I don't know as I could get down and up out of the tub every day either. But geez, for your soul as well as your body, I hope you can find a way to bathe daily. Guest guest
You know what aggravates me about those stupid commercials? Aside from the fact that it doesn't show us as we really are and can be - it makes us seem as though we'll be magically cured by taking a pill......and if we " don't " receive relief, well, then, we are obviously nuts. Guest guest
I use these big wipes when I cannot take a shower. They have aloe in them and they make me feel fresh. You can order them online. Guest guest
I am the same way. I have a chair for the shower but I can't stand to be in it. I cry the whole time I shower because to me it is the most humiliating thing I have done so far. I am so fat - even in the chair I can't lift my feet to wash them well. It does help but it is still exhausting. Anyway, gt the chair it does help when you are up to taking the shower. > > On Apr 8, 2008, at 3:03 AM, DebiAC012553@... wrote: > > > I go FIVE days without taking a bath. Horrible isn't it. Now it's all showers,...no more " rubber ducky " songs although I supose I could hang a rubber ducky by the shower head, it's not the same. Geez. This is like my grandmother walking down the street holding her cane in the air to show everybody she didn't need it. I hope that you will stop crying from humiliation for using the shower chair. For pete's sake, is anyone going to *know* that you use one? Use what you need to when you need it to do things. What on earth does it matter if you can't do things the way you used to? As for washing your feet, get a long handled brush. It feels wonderful. If you can't reach to wash your posterior, use a longer wash cloth or a hand towel and stuff it in various crevices to soak while you're sitting, and use a shower massage to rinse. If you can't stand to do the dishes or load and unload the dishwasher, or to chop vegetables and prepare food, get a stool for the kitchen. If your posterior doesn't fit on a small sized stool, get one with a bigger seat. If carrying laundry hampers is to hard, put the hamper on a luggage cart and wheel it. If it's too painful to walk around the bed repeatedly to make it, learn to make it one side at a time. Maybe it's because I've been so badly mobility impaired, and was super morbidly obese for so many years - I've found many ways over the years to accomplish tasks that I could no longer do in a conventional way. There's a great deal of satisfaction in coming up with clever ways to accomplish ordinary tasks that most people take for granted. Some people will never understand why others do things differently. I remember one co-worker calling me lazy because I e- mailed or called instead of walking over to his office; he didn't care that every step was excruciating for me. The heck with him. So use the danged shower chair and stop crying about it! Z

My dignity does not depend on the way I do things, but the end result. And there are value judgments to make. Is the dignity of standing to load the dishwasher, and possibly not being able to do it, greater than the dignity of having someone walk into my house and not see a mountain of dishes in the sink, because I sat on a stool to load the dishwasher? Is the dignity of avoiding the grocery store because I can't make it through the store, and having an empty fridge and pantry, greater than the dignity of dishing up a nourishing meal for myself because I rode a cart through the store? Is the dignity of wearing dirty, smelly, wrinkled clothing because I couldn't get the laundry hamper to the laundry room greater than the dignity of pulling clean clothing out of a drawer because I wheeled the hamper to the laundry room on a luggage cart? Or is foul body odor somehow more dignified than doing whatever I need to do, standing or sitting, to get clean? I was severely mobility impaired for years, and super morbidly obese even longer. Being able to walk and stand, and being a normal size is new to me and hasn't yet lost its novelty, nor have I forgotten what it takes to function when mobility impaired or obese. I lost my mobility during those years, not my dignity. Z > Years back was the last time I was able to take a bath, the mechanics > of climbing into the tub became impossible. Guest guest
, I have found that since my hand/arm strength isn't what it used to be, even in such a short period of time, that rather than " overload " myself, I will make multiple trips - for example, if I know stuff has to go into our bedroom and I obviously know I will make more than one trip to said bathroom off master bedroom because of the water pill I take, I kind of " line things up " on my kitchen counter and as I make a trip to the restroom, I take stuff in and put it up. Same with the bed. First thing in the morning, I am too darned stiff to make the bed at all so I leave it for one of " those trips " . I cannot stand for long periods anymore, but I empty and put up all I can and then come back to it. I may make my DH's coffee on one trip (the kitchen is on the way....lol), the kids' lunches coming back from another. My philosophy has changed a wee bit - as long as I get it done, does it matter if it takes me a good portion of the day, on and off, to do it? Absolutely not. As for the floors, DH takes care of those because they set off such severe spasms that it takes a muscle relaxer AND a painkiller to get 'em gone. So I do the frou-frou stuff, he does the floors. And next year, when we redo our bathroom (going to expand the shower and take out the tub), I am already asking for the bars to be put in and also, perhaps a ledge/seat; I've seen them on those home shows so I know they are available. I know that no matter if we are male or female, we have to get over the embarrassment of us needing to utilize things to get stuff done. I will also do what I can to make myself as healthy as possible (i.e. continue to lose weight); it won't help my pain other than there won't be as much swelling and therefore as much inflammation, but I'll feel better about me. And since this disease has taken so much already, I need to feel good about me and may be able to add more on to what I am capable of! I like the idea of a foot brush thingie; I am going to put that on my list. As a diabetic, I have to be careful of my feet but they gotta be clean too! Darlene > > > I am the same way.
