Guest guest
, I must beg to differ a little here. Being a nurse and also having read so much, Tylenol is NOT an anti-inflammatory drug. The Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory class of medications or NSAIDS are Aspirin (the oldest), Aleve which is the brand name for Naproxen Sodium, and Advil which is the brand name for Ibuprofen. Also, many people have the belief that hydrocodone is codeine. It is not. Now, Prescription pain meds such as Tylenol #3 and Tylenol #4 ARE a combination of Tylenol and Codeine. Some people who are allergic to Codeine may or may not be able to take hydrocodone. But Tylenol is not anti-inflammatory. It also blows my mind that Tylenol now makes a Tylenol Arthritis strength medicine. This would lead you to believe that it is anti-inflammatory or has one mixed with the Tylenol. Guess what???? All it is is.... Plain old Tylenol without anything else in it that was made as an Extended release tablet. Very decieving. Anyway, I certainly mean no harm . I love all of your posts. So please don't take me wrong here. You are completely right about the rest of the post. Hydrocodone is habit forming and yes,,,, Tylenol CAN ruin the liver and kidneys in anyone who takes more than the recommended dose per day OR already has compromised kidneys or liver. And yes, Tylenol should not be taken by anyone who consumes alcohol on a regular basis. hugs, Debra V. Subject: Re: -- A PRISON OF PILLS-- To Debra V To: Fibromyalgia_Support_Group Date: Monday, April 28, 2008, 5:09 AM Hydrocodone in a 5/500 pill contains: 5mg of codeine - pain reliever 500mg of acetaminophen - an anti-inflammatory Hydrocodone is habit-forming, and can lead to physical and psychological addiction, (run out of your prescription and you will eat shirt buttons) addiction varies depending on unique biological differences. Hydrocodone pills contain acetaminophen, consuming more than 4,000 milligrams (8 pills) of acetaminophen a day can cause liver damage, jaundice, and even liver failure if it is taken in excessive doses for an extended period of time. Drinking alcohol while taking Hydrocodone can cause serious damage to the liver, kidneys, and stomach wall. ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Guest guest
I'm going to get all of ducks in a row to avoid dispensing confusion on the chemical makeup of Hydrocodone. Also I don't want anyone to take any of the posts on this subject as " hostile " , they're not. My " credibility " on the subject comes directly from either the pharmacy handout, books, and the internet. I'll start by listing some of the internet sources: Wikipedia Hydrocodone: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrocodone In the first sentence, " Hydrocodone or dihydrocodeinone is a semi-synthetic opioid derived from two of the naturally occurring opiates, codeine and thebaine " . (This is the pure form of Hydrocodone, and is not what I was talking about.) Logically, if the product is derived from codeine it contains codeine. Scrolling farther down the article to the area, " Hydrocodone Compounds " addresses my initial post: When sold commercially in the United States, hydrocodone is always combined with another medication. (I my case 5 mg/500 mg hydrocodone/acetaminophen) Those combined with acetaminophen are known by various trademark names, such as Vicodin and Lortab. Hydrocodone also can be combined with aspirin (e.g., Lortab ASA), ibuprofen (e.g., Vicoprofen), and certain antihistamines (e.g., Chemdal HD). Pure hydrocodone tablets or capsules are not offered currently by any USA drug company. Wikipedia Hydrocodone Compounds: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrocodone_compound Wikipedia Acetaminophen redirected as Paracetamol: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetaminophen (Derived from coal tar,...How Lovely) A continuing theme occurring concerning acetaminophen or paracetamol is that articles point out, it is not a very effective anti-inflammatory agent. This is a good stopping point for me, because as all of us FM suffers know TMI can come on fast and become difficult to follow, so I'll just reach up and ring the bell on the information bus. My stops coming up. Everybody keep the information flowing, we all need it.
Guest guest
I am one of those unfortunate souls who cannot take hydrocodone OR codeine. So until I see my new rheumatologist next month, I am left with neurontin (up to 3x a day), the tylenol arthritis (I'm on coumadin so cannot take naproxen, which hurts my kidneys anyhow), robaxin as needed for the spasms and darvocet when the pain gets to be too much. But I know that there are other things I can take once I see the new doctor that will help me get more relief. Until then, I am doing what I can to survive, because as my grandma used to say " I ache like a toothache " ......sigh.....
