Guest guest
Hydrocodone is the generic version of Vicodin and I have been taking it for 8 years now. Taking more than the prescribed amount, for instance 3 pills at a time instead of the prescribed 1 pill will eventually cause problems. Mixing high doses with alcohol also will cause a problem with your liver over a period of time. The use of Vicodin within a reasonable dose is not going to melt your liver in a short amount of time, nor is it unduly hard on your organs if taken as directed. Quite a bit of research goes into pharmaceuticals before they are approved by the FDA and it does not seem logical to prescribe a product that is so hazardous that your doctor wants to take you off of it right away. If there is any risk for later, I have to take that chance because I need the pain relief right now. I'll just have to deal with any potential problems later, -if- they start to show at all. Remember that " might " and " could " are not an absolute, immediate pain relief is. Use caution if a doctor says or does something that is not backed up with facts, hard research, and testimony from patients that are taking the medication. Stay informed and be as healthy as possible.
Guest guest
I am not so sure that the hydrocodone in vicodin is as bad for the liver as the Tylenol they put in it. Now Tylenol is one of the worst drugs for the kidneys the way I understand it. But I believe that if you do not take a really large dose of tylenol everyday, it should not be a problem. I believe the maximum adult dose for someone without any liver problems or kidney problems is about 3000mg a day. I don't take anywhere near that amount. I never take any other products with Tylenol in it. I take under 2000mg a day total in my hydrocodone. But, also alot of doctors just don't WANT to prescribe it because they are afraid of you " getting addicted " or they are afraid of their own license in reference to the DEA. Which I think if you have a really chronic illness with pain, the DEA won't mess with them. (just my thougts). Also, narcotics such as Vicodin do not get you " high " if you are taking them for pain instead of recreation. The medication will work on the pain before it will have the affects of a " high " . hugs, Debra V. Subject: Question about the Vicodin To: Fibromyalgia_Support_Group Date: Sunday, April 27, 2008, 1:21 AM Ok, I've read that several of you are taking vicodin. How often do you take it? I was on it in the begining but my doc wanted me off of it asap. He said that it was as bad as taking a lot of Advil. For any lenghth of time. It screws up your liver and some other things. I really liked it but aren't you worried? Just wondering.Jan ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Guest guest
Hi , You write the most informative and well written posts. I agree with you completely. I have taken 5mg of hydrocodone 3 X day for a while now. My doctor isn't concerned about any side effects and I haven't had any. My liver function is just fine. I so agree with the need for pain relief. If the pain ever goes away, I will worry about coming off of it then - happily. I'm sure I will be able to do it, even if it is hard. But that is for another day and time. My pain doesn't show any signs of letting up. Guest guest
Hi Jan, I guess any pill taken in excess will play havoc with your liver. That being said....if the doctor prescribes it for you and knows how many you are taking, you are having your blood checked routinely, I don't think you have any cause for worry. I go for days when I don't take any Vicodin, then there are days I take 2 or 3. You do what you have to do...like said, I'll worry about the pain now and liver ailments if they come along later. /Mi Question about the Vicodin Ok, I've read that several of you are taking vicodin. Guest guest
, If you are in such pain that you feel the need to cry or just not know what to do...take one...you will be glad you did. /Mi Question about the Vicodin To: Fibromyalgia_Support_Group Date: Sunday, April 27, 2008, 1:21 AM Ok, I've read that several of you are taking vicodin. I believe the maximum adult dose for someone without any liver problems or kidney problems is about 3000mg a day. 4000mgs and above will become toxic, even then it occurs over a period of time depending on your current health and condition of internal organs. I rarely max out at half of that amount on my worst days. That factors out to 8 500mg pills in a 24hr period. Keep in mind that the medication will not work while it's still in the bottle, take it as prescribed. If you feel uneasy about starting a new medication, cut the pill in half and take half a dose so you don't become overwhelmed by its effects and gradually ease into a full dose.
