Guest guest
Cathy, Based on a Medline search http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov/gw/Cmd using Chiari AND " trigeminal neuralgia " as the search term, yes it does. See below for the search results. [Trigeminal neuralgia as the first symptom of Chiari malformation] Gelabert M. Neurologia. 2001 Apr;16(4):189-90. Spanish. No Abstract Available. [Article in Spanish] Servicio de Neurología, Hospital de Bellvitge-Prínceps d'Espanya, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona. The association of trigeminal neuralgia and Arnold-Chiari malformation (ACM) is uncommon. We report two cases of trigeminal neuralgia as the first and single clinical feature of an ACM. The pathophysiological relationship between ACM and trigeminal malformation is discussed. Also, the need for magnetic resonance imaging in trigeminal neuralgia is emphasized, as this is a noninvasive study which may provide valuable etiological information and prevent the progression of the disease. Bernie Meyer, WACMA staff, diagnosed in '89, Not decompressed , age 61, married 32 yrs, wife Judy, three kids, ages- 25, 28, 30, symptoms of tinnitus and minor balance problems are stable wacma staff contact Does this have anything to do with trigeminal neuralgia than you cathy ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get more from the Web. Guest guest
Fallon developed Trigiminal Neuralgia after she was hit by a car in a restraunt in Jan 2002. I suspect that all the surgeries combined w/the blow to her head jolted things and thus the pressure on the nerve. In her case, the chiari came first and then the TN but I do think they can be related. That's just my opinion.
Guest guest
In fact, there have been a few publications mentioning Chiari and TN. If you go to PubMed at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=PubMed and type the following: chiari NOT budd NOT osteotomy AND " trigeminal neuralgia " you'll get 7 abstracts. Not alot, but considering how often Chiari is missed or deemed insignificant when it might not be, I wouldn't be surprised if it's more commonly associated...
