Guest guest
After speaking with school today, it is becoming more apparent that 's sensitivities and horrible mood is surrounded by EATING!!!! This should have been so obvious to me. Family gatherings revolve around food. Everything revolves around eating. First thing is I will be eliminating the pudding and going solely to the g-tube. Thank you Yuka and as I will be going full force ahead with exploring this. I will get to the bottom of this and have lots of reading to do. Yuka, can I have the recipe you use for ? Guest guest
Debbie- How exciting to have an inspired understanding ) Here is 's tried and true recipe. It has worked so well, and his allergies as an infant were so severe (not only the eggs, milk and wheat, but it seemed also carrots, peaches and other things) that I have superstitiously been highly resistant to changing it ...... In each Osterizer pitcher I put: (1) 3 1/2 ounce tub of Gerber's 2nd foods Sweet Potato (come two tubs to a package) (1) 3 1/2 ounce tub of Gerber's 2nd foods Green Bean (1) 2 1/2 ounce jar of Gerber's 2nd foods Turkey (1) 2 1/2 ounce jar of Gerber's 2nd foods Beef or Chicken Then I fill the space remaining in the blender up to the 5 cup mark with half rice milk and half soy milk Then I add 1/3c of Toddler Soy formula powder This makes two large Rubbermaid m " on the go chug " bottles, which hold 20 ounces each - he takes three each day (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and adds 2 ounces of olive oil to his first meal in the morning. We heat the food three times, 55 seconds each time, bottle on the side, shaken well between heatings in a microwave. This eliminates hot spots, exploding or melting bottles and keeps the blended diet thin enough to go through the Mic-Key *it is much thicker/viscous cold). I do worry about the plastic and the microwaving -but this is how it is. is completely self sufficient - deciding when he eats, heating his food and clearing up after himself. He is a happy fellow when the whole shelf is full of his meals - ready to go for the better portion of a week at a time. This blend can be frozen for travel or ahead preparation - but it is a little " grainy " and " watery " on defrosting. For traveling meals (lunch at school) we make a " thin " blend - either cutting the normal blend in half with rice milk (thinner than soy) or making a 20 ounce bottle of rice milk plus 2/3c toddler soy formula powder. It is what works for us, and has passed the reluctant scrutiny of more than one dietician/nutritionist (who mostly don't like blended diets). Good luck- Yuka RE: p.s. Guest guest
Hi Kellie, First, I am not sure if this is specifically related to CHARGE or because of past history of surgeries, experiences etc. or another underlying issue(s). I do know all the kids are different but have different characteristics of behavior which vary depending on communication level, vision and hearing, which is across the board for any kid with these disabilities. In my son's case, he has always exhibited some sort of OCD and also has mood swings where he goes from happy to not in a second. That is MY son, it may not happen to another kid with CHARGE, but what I am seeing is that it is more common and I am not alone and most of the people on the list understand what I am going through and it's appreciated. What I have seen is that most of the kids exhibit some sort of OCD and irritability, but not all. I think environment and demands are a big factor and how well that child can handle it is another. My son does the best in a structured environment where everything is predicable and everything is his way. Unfortunately, life doesn't always cater to him and so we all have to adapt to him, not the other way around. The general public doesn't understand this and it makes it hard to explain this to just anyone, even my own family. The behaviors can be apparent early on and should be addressed immediately, but sometimes you don't know what to address and how you should handle it. I didn't see the mood problem until about age 4 and the OCD I saw a little younger but that could have been anything. It's also hard to tell " normal kid stuff " from what isn't right. It's all hindsight now. I am getting better at it now, but my son is almost 10. Currently big demands are being placed on my son to eat - either at school or at home. All of his escalated behaviors as I am putting together revolve around eating. Whether it is the food we are giving him he isn't feeling well from or because he is frustrated with the whole thing I can't tell yet or maybe he has something physically wrong. He talks very well but I don't think he really knows why he is so bothered. He did tell me last night his pudding makes him feel sick. I also notice sickness makes 's mood and OCD worse and he sometimes can't regulate himself back to baseline without a medication adjustment. Debbie RE: p.s.
