If she has thyroid deficiency it is IMPERATIVE she be treated with

thyroid hormones. Children wiht low thyrodi do not develop normally.

Mentally they have problms learning and physically they can be stunted.

My kid's doc, who is armour-friendly but not ready to prescribe it for

my kids (though they need it, IMO), suggested thyrosol, a metagenics

proproduct that has Vit A, D, E, selenium, iodine, and riboflavin.

A warning, it tastes nasty even when not crushed, so getting them to

eat it is a huge problem.

Her heighth was mostly in the 95% but now it's in the 50%, her weight

has always been low(ranging from 10% to a little negative), but she

is breastfed and I know it's common. She does have some digestive

issues, tends to be constipated, sensitive to certain foods, gassy at

times and smells yeasty sometimes.

How would I know for sure? There's no way I can do a saliva test,

and hubby doesn't want to prick her.

Do you have any links where I can support getting a blood test. One

that shows the effects/risks of low cortisol??

Not the cortisol, LOW thyroid is VERY detrimental to a child growing and

will prevent normal brain growth as well as physical growth.

I really do no tknwo ANYTHING about particulars for babies.

Having never had one myself I reall y am in the dark abotu what thye

need for good grpowth and health. I would avoid the usual goitrogens and

make certain she has the best nutrition (ORGANIC) you can afford. Allow

free access to sea salt and ask doctor for a good vitamin mineral

supplement as theser are just abotu all the support I knwo is safe for a

baby.

I agree with Val. I can understand your dh not wanting to cause her pain,

but sometimes a little pain now can prevent worse things later. Getting

blood drawn won't be that painful, but it will show if you need to be

conserned about thyroid issues which could have very serious consequenses

later. My philosophy is better safe than sorry!

Be sure to get the Free T3s, FreeT4s, TSH, thyroid antibodies and REverse T3

wouldn't hurt. If they fuss about getting all those, just say that you want

to make sure they test it all so she doesn't have to get stuck again. The

first 3 are the most important.

Another suggestion for a doc who might be more Armour friendly,

and knows how to treat children who have all sorts of problems - go

to autism.com and find a doctor in the Defeat Autism Now! listing.

Not all of them are equal though. Low thyroid in a child may be a

'sub-feature' of ASD - I know a lot of ASD kids have adrnal issues

and I think thyroid as well.

Be careful. There are a LOT of yahoo groups about such

" biomedical " treatment by state that can help with which doctors are

good, and there are also general lists (Autism-Merury for one).

Depending on what caused the thyroid problem in the baby, there may

be other spectrum traits involved. Genetic is a possibility (though

I'd think exceedly rare) - screwed up de-iodinase enzymes in which a

T3 test would be *imparative. Screwups in the T3 receptor would be

another possiblity, but I'd think also exceedingly rare. Selenium

transporters - maybe, but I'd expect more things to screw up than

just thyroid.

Metal toxicity can cause thyroid (and adrenal) problems, and could

do so prenatally. A hair-elements test will tell this. (the metals

don't 'redline' on the test in most cases I think, but the pattern of

different metal in the hair is affected - I'm not sure quite how or

why. Andy Cutler has a book on interpretation of hair test results.

If the child is metal toxic and you want to get it out (chelation),

get on the Autism-Mercury list - it uses as it's " Bible " Andy

Cutler's " Amalgam Illness " . From what I know metal chelation should

be dosed at 4-hr intervals to keep a steady blood level of the

chelator. This is different from the 8-hr dosing that a lot of the

DAN docs use, but.. The half life if 4 hours and if you want to keep

a steady blood level, you dose at the half life.. Don't chelate with

ALA at the same time as one of the other ones (there are two, DMSA

and DMPS if I remember the letters right for ones). ALA crosses into

the brain, and so can redistribute metals into the brain. You want

to get rid of the body burden first using the other chelators before

getting rid of stuff in the brain.

Owens is involved in the DAN initiative, and knows could

also help.
