Guest guest
I am so excited I thought I'd share. Patty just got her video relay system completed. She has a hard time hearing on the phone and has been using her side kick to instant message people or use a telephone relay system that is time consuming and frustrating. Not any more. Now she has a system in which a camera is on the tv. She sits in front of it and makes a call. Right there in front of her is a person who interprets what the caller is saying to her buy signing. Patty can then either sign back and the interpreter verbally relays the message to the caller or!!! instead Patty can respond verbally directly to the caller. Oh, better yet, people that sign do not need an interpreter in between. They just sit there and watch the person as they sign. Oh it'll be so good for Patty. I'm thrilled. And even better, this is free for anyone who is deaf. They just install it for you (for free) using a modem, and there you have it. Oh, and it costs nothing but whatever you already pay for the Internet. And!!! there is a way in which this can happen worldwide depending on technical aptitudes of the person making it work. All you would need is a camera and Internet access. I'm thinking CHARGE people worldwide can connect that way. Isn't life going to be cool and even more independent for Patty? She can talk to doctors now, order pizza, and more. One last thing. People can also leave a message. It has this light that blinks or her pager beeps. She'll get messages! And you should see the light that alerts her of an incoming call or message. There's no way she'd miss that baby no matter how bad her vision is. Cool huh! Guest guest
That is way cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We just discovered skype.com - very similar way to do free video phone calls with anyone else signed up on skype using your computer and webcam. I had heard of the free video relay thing but never knew anyone using it. That is just amazingly cool! Michele W

Guest guest
This is very cool technology. I have to call and get ours reinstalled: After we moved something has gone haywire and we can't see if we connect to another person who is Deaf using the videophone. But we can use the relay interpreter. Go figure! Anyway, has used it at the Deaf School to call me on my cell phone. She has also used it to call grandparents. And she has called my cell from home when I was running errands. It really is a very, VERY cool thing! She doesn't have to use a tty to call someone - she doesn't type or spell well yet - so it is so natural for her to use with her ASL! And you are right it is so much faster than using the tty relay. I used to ask people to let me call them back from a landline phone if they called using the relay service with tty: It took an average of twice as long, you had to remember to tell the other party to " GA " (go ahead) for them to realize it was their turn, etc. Videopone is an instant access, real-time communication tool. Congratulations to Patty for gaining a great tool! Friends in CHARGE, Marilyn Ogan _____ From: CHARGE [mailto:CHARGE ] On Behalf Of Turk22082@... Guest guest
Oh! i'm so excited for patty and at the same time i'm sooo jealous - butterflies are EXPENSIVE for hearing people - i want one and will have one eventually so help me bob but for now it's a big item on my wish list... even if i could afford it right now i don't have a permanant address to set one up at anyway... but it's still on my wishlist i'm assuming it's a sorenson? what model is it? vp200? okay i'm not gonna obsess about it i'm gonna let it go Cole p.s. skypes.com is okay but i don't have a webcam and if i did and the person i was calling didn't i'd still be outta luck - but it is a cheaper option for a hearing person (if you could convince your Deaf friends to use it over their butterfly or if the other person had a webcam and no butterfly) -- some of my hearing friends and i are considering skypes as a way to keep in contact and keep up our asl skills > > I am so excited I thought I'd share. Guest guest
Cole, It's a sorenson VP-200. We too had a webcam for my mother to speak with us. That was awful. The other night Patty called my cousin who is deaf. They sat there talking with each other. It was just mind boggling that two deaf people could communicate like that without a relay person. While they were talking his kids and wife jumped in and said hi and joined in on a bit of their conversation. The cool thing is you could hear them and they could hear us. It's so exciting. She also used it to call T-mobile about her broken side kick. Usually I would end up having to take the phone to help her. Nope, not this time! She also never can call 411 for phone numbers. She can't hear them and they certainly have a problem understanding her if the name is difficult. Again, No more! I am thrilled beyond thrilled. Here's yet another thing that makes her life all the better! Give it a few years and I bet it won't be so expensive. At least that is what I hope so my entire family can get one. Guest guest
me too (about the expensive thing) i can't help but wonder if i could get a used vp100 cheaper... i'll have to ask diane one thing - if patty gets her own place (or is she in her own place now i forget?) anyway, they strongly strongly strongly reccomend she keep a landline so she can dial 911 if there's an emergency - many deaf ppl don't keep one because the VP is so convienient but in an emergency 911 can trace a landline call much faster than they can a VP call Cole > > Cole, > > It's a sorenson VP-200. Guest guest
Cole, Yes, yes, yes. Patty can't ever get rid of her cell just for that reason. She needs to be able to call 911 no matter where she is. And boy oh boy does she know how to do that. Thanks for that important reminder.
