Cathie, this sounds wonderful. The families must have had a great time! Come

on out here and help us plan our special needs events. :-)

end of year picnic w/school

We had a Special Ed PTA end of year picnic yesterday at the beach. Our

district has almost 900 classified students. (some very mild, some on the

spectrum, of course on the most involved!) The Special Ed PTA has about

180

members. I am last years president, so i am still very involved. We decided

to give something back to our families, and to have a picnic, also give us all

a chance to get to know the other children and their families. We had over

100 people! we bbq'd, had a DJ w/music, games, face painting, gve away sand

pails, bubbles etc! It was so exiciting. Everyone had a great time. Our

new superintendent showed up for about 1/2 hour. She never met . She was

so interested in meeting her! She has heard about her, (and also i have

written a couple letters recently, as we are having a frustrating year).

Anyway, she was impressed w/. She said she didn't expect to see her so

able

to do what she was doing. And was not doing much at the time! She

asked how I have gotten to where I am w/, how I have learned all I have

etc. I told her mainly this list and all of you! How we are there, helping and

guiding one another. How in the beginning I was only asking, now I ask and

can also offer! She talked to us for about 20 mns of the 30 she was there!

I made a joke about our CSE being Wednesday, and that this year has been

extremely frustrating, and the i hoped the meeting goes well. !

Have a good weekend everyone.

Cathie-

That is so awesome! I keep wishing and trying to get our Spec Ed parents

here organized in some fashion but it just never works. People are too

busy, or too private, or too. whatever. We have such a smaller school

district - I don't think we have 900 kids altogether :-) You'd think it'd

be easier to coordinate in a smaller town, but it seems harder. When you

get 10% attendance, you have nearly 100 people. When I get 10% attendance,

we have the same handful of folks who already know each other anyway. I

envy you and your wonderful group.

The superintendent's visit will surely impact the way she thinks and

responds to all the spec ed kids. By being the " most involved " kids in the

school, ours have a unique opportunity to educate and enlighten.

I hope that meeting goes superbly!
