Guest guest
Michele, I find this very interesting as well. :-) We also have used brushing protocol with Kendra and she always has liked it alot. Most of us would like the feeling of a massage and perhaps there is something in the brushing that also relaxes the entire system. As you stated, perhaps there 'is something that our kids' nervous systems may crave and/or benefit from'. That is so neat to hear of the huge expectant smile Aubrie has on her face when being brushed. If you ask her what she likes about it, do you think she would have an answer? I don't believe Kendra can answer that type of question about the brushing at this time with words, but I would be really curious to know what Aubrie might say. If Aubrie has an answer, I will ask Kendra if she has the same feelings about it. Aubrie's words might help us understand Kendra's reaction as well. Thanks for the neat message. :-) Mom to Kendra, , and Camille Brushing therapy I've meaning to mention this just as an interesting thing to note. I'm not sure of the significance. We did Brushing Therapy with Aubrie when she was little but never did it very regularly. Every once in a while, I'll remember it and try it again. It makes sense that it should be beneficial to her but I don't see obvious results. So. why work at fitting it into our lives, right? Anyway, for some reason she remembered it a week or 2 ago. Now she asks me pretty much every night before bed to please brush her. She just loves it. We do the full body brushing plus joint compressions. I wanted to share because I know many of you are faced with kids who can't communicate as well about what things seem to work for them. For all of us who have to prioritize which things to give our time and energy to, knowing how much Aubrie seems to enjoy and seek it might help to believe that it is something that our kids' nervous systems may crave and/or benefit from. If this is new to you, here's an overview I found online: http://www.ot-innovations.com/content/view/55/46 Like I said, I just find it interesting and wanted to share although I'm not sure of the significance. I just know she loves it enough to ask for it every day with a huge expectant smile on her face. And that huge smile stays on throughout the session. Guest guest
- I'll ask her and see what I can come up with. I'm very curious too. She tells me it feels good and she loves it. She has also said that it is sort of tickly - but not in a bad way. I will ask her some open-ended questions to see what she says. Then I may ask " Does it feel calming? " " Does it help you pay attention? " and other things like that. But I'll try not to put any words into her mouth until I give her the chance to think it through for herself. Guest guest
I would really appreciate any responses Aubrie has, Michele. I, too, don't want to put words in Kendra's mouth, (or in her hands), but knowing some of the actual terms that come to Aubrie would be a neat opening to try to discuss it with Kendra. Kendra is good at answering questions in sign or writing, especially if they are 'yes' or 'no' questions. Having some possible clues from Aubrie will help me construct some of these questions. Guest guest
When I asked Aubrie about it, she said that it feels good. When she is excited, it calms her. When she's already calm, it makes her happy. If she did it before school, she thinks it would make it easier to pay attention. Guest guest
Thanks so much, Michele. Please let Aubrie know how much I appreciate her feed-back to help me to possibly understand Kendra's thoughts or reactions. Wow. Guest guest
- You're welcome. Last night, she was way overtired and hyper when I brushed her. I did NOT see an immediate calming effect :-) - I'm curious to know what Tim says about it.
