Guest guest
I'm scheduled to go next week for a thyroid uptake scan. I keep putting this off because the radioactive part makes me nervous. I know there are all sorts of issues with the RAI to kill off the thyroid, but what about the uptake scan? I know I will drink something and go back the next day to have the scan. I have 2 children and I want to make sure that this won't affect them or my husband. Shoot, I don't want the cat and dog to have problems either. So is the uptake scan anything I need to take extra precautions with? Thanks! Guest guest
I had RAI 15 years ago, so barely remember. But I do remember they told me I was slightly radioactive so to stay away from any pregnant women. I would just say not to hug anyone for a couple of days. Find out what the half-life on the radioactivity is and that'll let you know how long to be careful. Barb " Cherie " wrote: > > I'm scheduled to go next week for a thyroid uptake scan. Guest guest
Hi Rie, The dose is miniscule in comparison to a treatment dose, say, for thyca. Are they looking for cancer in you? I don't know why you would have a RAI scan unless cancer was suspect, but that is only my experience. I've had many of these. The radiation oncologist on the thyca list says to treat it as if you have a cold in relationj to being around others, but I get a tad obsessive and I wouldn't hug a wee child or have them close to my neck for that 48-72 hours. I would also have minimal skin to skin contact. That's just me. uptake scan ?? I'm scheduled to go next week for a thyroid uptake scan. Guest guest
Thanks . That's pretty much what I was thinking. I'll just make sure my girls understand that they can't hug me for a couple of days. I've had 2 ultrasounds that show cysts and nodules. The first one was done in October 2006 and the second one was done June 2007. The cysts and nodules had grown during that time period. The endo. I saw after the first ultrasound said it wasn't cancer. I have no idea how he decided that. My primary doctor ordered the 2nd ultrasound and the reccomendation on it was for an uptake scan. My primary doctor's reasoning is that we need to have the scan done to make sure it isn't cancer. Another endo. I saw said I didn't need the scan because therer isn't a history of thyroid cancer in my family and my bloodwork is normal. Of course, this is the same doctor who used the words " I'm just here to rule out thyroid " and told me the rest of my endocrine work was " fine " . Maybe he's psycic, since the only tests he ran were TSH, FT4, and thyroid antibodies. Needless to say, I haven't gone back. I don't like being lied to. At any rate, I'm hopeful that I can start thyroid medicine (armour) soon and if I'm ever going to do this test I need to do it before I start. No way am I going to start thyroid and then come off of it for 6 weeks. No way! Rie A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Guest guest
I'm confused - are you getting the scan (useless test for Grave's) or are you doing RAI (even useless and dangerous supposed treatment for Grave's)? I have Grave's and the uptake scan cost me $1700 and I had a normal scan, even though I had high levels of Grave's antibodies (TSI test) which is really the definitive test for Grave's. So I paid $1700 for nothing and took the Radioactive pill, which is likely dangerous all to prove nothing. Remember that the medical industry is really about making money, and making a profit. Have you had the TSI test? I was a bit of an unusual case as when I was diagnosed, my thyroid levels were not high, yet I had high TSI (Grave's antibodies) and the eye disease pretty bad. For more info, I would join the Grave's group as they have a great deal of info on the scan and RAI, so that you don't just take it from me. Best to get the opinions of many that have experienced it. Guest guest
It's not the RAI to kill off the thyroid. This is the scan to determine if the nodules are hot or cold indicating cancer or not. I have had the antibody tests run and they were negative (so far anyway). Rie A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.
