Hi I live in Northern CA, SF Bay Area, but actually flew down to LA

(Torrance, CA) to see a specialist at the Holtorf Medical Group

(http://www.hormoneandlongevitycenter.com/). They are very

specialized, I wanted to see Dr. Holtorf himself but I don't think he

is taking new patients for like 1 year! There is helpful info on the

website re: hormones, and handouts. They specialize in hormones, CFS,

thyroid, etc. If you want more info, email me and we can discuss my

experiences there! I see Dr. Wightman.

l completely agree that Holtorf is a rip off....his clinic is all about the

money....they charge absolutely ridiculous prices and give you their very own

t3.....l wouldnt go to them if they were cheap....Val V.

My daughter saw Dr. Holtorf last July and he seemed very

knowledgable on thyroid and adrenals. On the other hand, I saw a

Dr. Shah (in the same clinic) and it was a waste of my time. To top

it off, she is one of those tight lipped, arrogant types. I think I

knew more about thyroid than she....she didn't even palpate my

thyroid. I learned that even though a certain clinic is well known,

not ALL the dr's there are going to be top range.

Also I found them expensive and Dr. Holtorf really pushes " his'

compounding pharmacy.

Just my two cents.

Neil,

She prescribes a compounded cream for him. She also treats my thyroid and

adrenals. I'm not sure of the other things you asked about as i've not used

them. I'm also not sure of the office visit as I have insurance that covers my

visit.

I would suggest you call her office and ask to speak to Luz and tell her I

recommened Dr. Jao in this group.

She has been my Doctor for 20 years now and I couldn't be happier with her.

She goes natural whenever possible. Goodluck.

We traveled from abroad to see him for only one visit and then

followed up by phone. I was so disgusted with Dr. Shah, that I

turned to STTM and began to self medicate. My daughter followed up

once or twice with Holtorf. He had an impressive web site and

that's why we decided to go.

Hi Carlene,

I live in the southland too and am looking for a local doctor for low

T. I punched up Dr. Jao, looks promising as she is a D.O. Does she

prescribe injectable T for your husband, or a compounded cream? Does

she use HCG injections? Does she push a lot of high priced supplements

or expensive treatments? Any idea how much an office visit is? Does

she do thyroid and adrenals? Is your husband doing well most

importantly!??

Sorry for so many questions, but any information is helpful.

Naffy & Rhonda,

Have any of you heard things about or seen Dr. Wightman?

Does anyone take progesterone from them?

Re: Holtorf, I went for my first appt in January, and now do follow up

phone appointments. I've only had 2 appointments total, but numerous

phone conversations with Dr. Wightman b/c I have had problems with my

meds, etc.

Although I wouldn't classify them as my ideal (I think that's pretty

impossible unfortunately), they seem very knowledgeable on a RANGE of

issues, very progressive, and willing to treat with a combo of western

and holistic treatments. For instance, they are the only people who

ever thought to test my thrombotic marker panel, fibrinogen, etc. to

see if I had a clotting disorder that a lot of their patients with CFS

have and the only people to test my natural killer cell function to

see how my immunity is doing, which is not well). I liked that they

are treating my immune dysfunction with Maitake-D mushroom supplement,

instead of some drug. I expressed my financial concerns and Dr. W

tries to work with me to get my stuff at places I can afford it.

However, I do think it's best to use their compounding pharmacy bc at

least I feel I can trust the accuracy/potency and if I have problems,

the doctors and pharmacists there can talk about it. However, maybe

I'm just falling prey to their financial scheme. Who knows? I realize

that these places make a lot of money on their pharmacies and selling

their supplements. And appointments are EXpensive!

But, I have come to learn that I have to go to private medical care,

sadly, to get any sort of practitioner to understand how to treat this

terrible adrenal-thyroid conundrum that we all face. I am 30 years

old, have been on medical leave for 4 months b/c I am so

dysfunctional. I just began to be able to have the energy to walk for

20 minutes at a time, and I was mountain biking and skiing a year and

a half ago! It is expensive but I feel there is no price I can put on

health, and it is worth my money to see how I can get better. Sadly,

our medical system is so screwed up that not one doctor within my

insurance plan diagnosed me with hypothyroid or adrenal. I'm sure you

all know this same story.

After reading their website I became quite enthusiastic and booked

appts. for me and my daughter. As I mentioned in a previous post,

my daughter saw Holtorf himself, and I was routed to Dr. Shah.

I was the one with high rt3 and Shah put me on a timed release t3/t4

combo, which was wrong. She barely looked at me....could have done

it all over the phone, instead of flying out to California! After

getting on the forums, I educated myself as to how it had to be

done, and dumped their costly combo med, and started self medicating

on Cytomel with the help of Val and the forum. (thanks again Val!)

My daughter, who did not have high rt3, was put on pure t3 at a VERY

low dose...go figure. Problem was, we live out of the country, and

every time

she needed a raise, I would have to call in to get the next

prescription....fedex..customs forms....etc....very costly and a big

hassle.

Because of this I have since put my dd on Cytomel as well.

My dd, who's b-12 was FINE, was given a shot before we went to the

pay counter. When we got to the counter, there was a SLEW OF

BOTTLES...vitamins, supplements...etc. I told the clerk to take it

all back. That I was only interested in the thyroid meds.

Then at the counter there is this sign that if you put your

testimonial on his website you can get a discount at your next visit.

It all just seemed to commercial to me. I left with a bad taste in

my mouth.

I think in general, Dr. Holtorf knows what he's doing, but in the

end it's all about the money. Dr. Shah was a JERK, and I've never

disliked a person more in my life! VERY CONDESCENDING. And not too

smart to boot.

I wouldn't waste my money....UNLESS you absolutely cannot do this on

your own and need someone to hold your hand. I understand wanting

someone to hold your hand.....that's why we have Val!!!!

> Val you say that Dr. wrightman and Dr. Holtorf don't prescribe

Armour or they don't do combo T3 And T4 (synthroid)? I saw Dr. Shah

and she was going to put me on Armour and decided to due the T3

instead because my RT3 was so high. From reading on here sounds

like I need to go the T3 routine until my RT3 is low.

for a few weeks, but not sure if that was necessary.

How long did you go to Holtorf? I have been having phone appointments since

my first visit in August. You are right they are very expensive, but open to

taking part in your own health.
