Guest guest
I am trying to find colorful beginning reading books with large text. Maybe ones that have beginning phonics or rhyming with a short number of words per page? Ethan can read large print about 48 font. I had books I used with my older son, but the print is too small and they are not very colorful. Ethan's usual vision therapist is taking the summer off so I'm looking for any suggestions. Thanks! Guest guest
Jody- I would call ISVI to see if they can suggest a resource. Maybe they have books you can borrow over the summer or know where you can get them. Also call Hearing and Vision Connections at ISD - . They are the resource for EI related to Hearing and Vision loss. They may have no one in the office right now with the state budget issues - but they will get with you as soon as someone is available. Another source of info is Lifespan at - they are the 411 for all disability related services statewide. If they don't already know of a source, they should be eager to research one for you. I've cc'd Joyce who is an EI provider at ISVI, Gail who is the director of HVC, and Mike, the director of Lifespan. Perhaps one of them will see this and help you out even if there is no one available to answer phone calls over the summer. Guest guest
Jody, try the site for American Printing House for the Blind. There is a great kids section (name is lost on me at the moment, but it will be listed clearly). pam Beginning reading books with large text I am trying to find colorful beginning reading books with large text. Guest guest
Does he like looking at pictures of himself doing things? You could take some photos of him different places or doing different things, get them printed off and put them on cardstock and print whatever you like on the bottom or top of the page in a really big font. " Aphont " is the name of the font that is best for people with visual impairments, you can download it free here: http://www.aph.org/products/aphont.html . Kennedy used to love these types of books I made for her when she was little. Just another idea! > > Jody- > > I would call ISVI to see if they can suggest a resource. > Maybe > they have books you can borrow over the summer or know where you can get > them. Guest guest
Jody, In addition to finding books that already have large type, you can also adapt regular books. 's teacher prints out the main words or numbers in 's books in large type, glues these to a file folder to provide some support, cuts them out, and velcroes them in the book. That way, can not only see the words better, but they can take the words out of the book, put them all together in a group, and then have match the words and put them in the book as they read it. This helps with word recognition and early reading skills. , mom to (5) http://kauffmanlak.blogspot.com/ --------------------------------- Bored stiff? Loosen up... Guest guest
- Yes! We did the same for Aubrie, but I'd forgotten! Great idea! We made a picture book of all the family so she could begin to learn their names and signs. You can also do all the places you go, " A Day in the Life of Ethan " , etc. Michele W _____ From: CHARGE [mailto:CHARGE ] On Behalf Of Weir Sent: Wednesday, July 04, 2007 7:15 AM To: CHARGE Subject: Re: Beginning reading books with large text Does he like looking at pictures of himself doing things? Guest guest
Jody, Have you tried a teacher supply store? During my days of kindergarten teaching we used books with large print and simple sentences. I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for but you may find something you can adapt there. ~ Mom of Jack (9mo.
