Hi, I wanted to recommend Prevacid and possibly a thicker formula?

Chrystine's reflux is still an issue, however it's tame compared to the amount

she

suffered with at Trinity's age. We finally found some relief with Enfamil A.R.

and Prevacid. Have you spoken with a gastroenterologist about the possibility

of a nissen? G-tube? I'm reminded daily that my Chrystine is tiny by just

about everyone and can understand your frustration. I've learned that despite

how many calories I pump, pump, pump-she's just tiny. I call her Thumbelina and

my Teacup. Just tell em all Trinity may be small, but she's mighty!!!

Hi Everyone!! I'm just wondering what meds other than Zantac are out there that

help fight acid reflux? Trinity has had 2 huge spit ups late this afternoon and

this evening and I would like to call her doctor tomorrow and see if he will

prescribe a new one. One of her episodes was a bunch of food the other was her

soy formula. The Zantac seems not to be working anymore. She has days where

she is fine but you can hear the girlgling from it in her throat. She also has

a bit of a cough, no fever though. I'm thinking the cough is related to the

reflux. Her nose has been a bit runny again as well and that concerns me

considering she had a bilateral choanal atresia. She is still feeding well, but

I'm still concerned it could be closing up again and that concern will always be

in the back of my head along with many MANY others. When her nose closed the

last time she had a lot of secretions coming out that got thicker and thicker.

This time not as much (it's runny and

clear in color) and I'm sure it's not closed off completely either. Her ENT

advised to watch her feedings and of course secretions from her nose. If it

appears she is having problems again just to call and schedule surgery no

appointment is necessary since the drive is 5 hours for us and the fact that

he's well aware of her situation. He did say a couple of weeks ago that the

passages were still clear and open but narrow and that another (her 3rd) nose

surgery was inevitable and we knew that. I/We suspect she will have many more.

Her ENT said that as she grows those passages will have to be widened anyway.

My main concern right now though is her reflux and getting a handle on it.

Nothing like being drenched in the middle of a feeding or soon thereafter. She

needs to keep the food down so she can gain weight. She is approx 11 1/2 to 12

pounds right now and 6 1/2 months old. I met a woman the other day who's 3

month old is 16 pounds but a chunk. Trinity is just a

long tiny skinny minny. Any advice or comforting words out there would be

appreciated.

Thank you,

My son Evan has been on Prevacid practically since birth. We have a pharmacy

that compounds a suspension for us.

Hi ,

Prilosec helped my son a lot. He spit up constantly and it was so

frustrating. I remember always having to pack 'spit up clean up gear'

as we called it wherever we went.

On another front, if you suspect her nasal pasages are closing, please

be sure to have the ENT scope her and check frequently. We knew it

was a possibility after our son's surgery to correct it, but the

doctors at Duke didn't make a big deal about it and our son, , was

clearly in respiratory distress at home. We took him to the doctor

several times and kept begging for help knowing in our hearts

something was wrong (Duke is farther away than the local hospital so

he didn't see the same ENT who operated on him) and he ended up

stopping breathing at home when his nose closed up. He ended up only

having a pin hole to breathe through via the NG tube that was in his

nose for feeding. He was fine after the ambulance came and they got

him on a respirator and fixed his nose again. But it was truly the

worst night of my life and I have admitted to myself that the

situation could have ended differently. I say this not to scare

anyone, but for two reasons: If you think there's any chance it's

closing up, act quickly and GO TO THE DOCTORS WHO KNOW you daughter

and can compare the opening from the last time. We learned that the

hard way. No we only see Duke doctors for things like this. We also

learned that the only one who advocates for your child is you and no

matter how silly you feel taking your child into the doctor for the

thousandth time for breathing issues, reflux or whatever your gut

tells you is wrong, GO and don't be afraid to ask for help. Having

severe reflux makes kids not want to eat and has to be dealt with,

too, and it's your doctors job to help you all with this. If they

won't continue to seek help for Trinity, I suggest finding someone

else who will.

We had spoken about the G-tube and opted to give Trinity a chance to grow and

gain weight, which she has done quite well with. She actually was able to

maintain her weight and continue growing in length after her nose re-closed.

She's just amazing. She taught herself to breath out of her mouth and she

barely ever fussed unless she was hungry which was all the time because we could

only feed her a couple of ounces at one time. So right now a G-tube is not an

option we are even considering. After her last nose surgery she put on over a

pound in just a matter of a couple of weeks and she's continuing upward. I'm

thinking this reflux thing can be remedied (at least for the time being) and

I'll do anything to try to do so before she goes through another surgery and has

a g-tube put in. I know they are " easy " to take care of. Another thing is

she's was eating like a horse and I'm wondering if she just got herself over

full and now she's irritated. I don't know......but

thanks for the heads up on the other medication. I'm going to call her

pediatrician this morning and see what he may suggest and recommend what you

told me and see what he says. Her formula is the Isomil Soy and supposedly

that's one of the better ones for reflux. I'm guessing the AR on the Enfamil is

for acid reflux???? Is it thicker? Thinking about it she does do better on

thicker foods. Actually, I'm going to get her in for an appointment. The cough

she has is really bothersome and now she won't eat/drink anything. I was up a

good portion of all night last night with her trying to figure out some way that

she could sleep comfortably.

Thank you and I will keep you all posted as to her progress.

Aubrie is now 9 yrs old. When she was an infant, she had severe GE reflux.

We did get a Gtube but did not get a fundoplication. Aubrie wasn’t eating

at the time orally at all. The medication that changed her life is

Prevacid. And the formula that changed things for her was Nutramigen. It’s

a hypoallergenic formula. She was tested for cow’s milk allergy, it came

back negative, but the dr supported trying the formula even though there was

no medical reason it should help. It was amazing the positive change!

She had her tube removed at about 1 ½ yrs old so she did outgrow the reflux.

If there is one thing we have learned it is definitely to fight for our child.

We learned that early on when she was in the NICU at Birmingham. I have read

and also heard from other mothers just exactly what you are telling me as far as

being her advocate. She can't talk WE can and boy did we make ourselves heard a

few times. I'm going to act on the first problem at hand with regards to her

reflux. I am just about 100% positive that that's what's causing the spit up.

She was scoped a couple of weeks ago and there was a narrowing on her left side

although he said both sides are narrow. She is breathing out of both sides

still so I don't think that is my upmost concern at this point. As of this

morning she will not eat. Sooooooooo, I'm working on getting her into her

pediatrician here on base (we're Air Force) but I have to go in a round about

way to get her in to see him since 99% of the time the appointment desk gives me

the song and dance that they don't have

appointments until such and such a date and take her to the ER. Ummmmmmmmmm,

no, her pediatrician will see her TODAY and I will make sure of that.

We learned a valuable lesson the last time our daughter had surgery well. If

she seems congested go in. She wasn't congested she too had a pin size hole on

one side and the other side was completely closed off so I can relate to your

story. We have found that here on base they don't mess with her, or at least

pediatrics doesn't. They will contact her ENT if necessary or just tell us to

bypass them and go. Luckily our military doc is wonderful with all of this. He

has helped us in so many ways so I wouldn't knock him. The ER doc's here on

base are a joke when it comes to her so I try to avoid that place like the

plague.

Okay, I'm now armed with 2 different kinds of meds (one from 2 other people)

so I will talk to the doc and see what he says.

Thank you so much.

I highly recommend Prevacid Solutab - 15 mg for reflux. I don't remember if you

said she was tube fed, but it can be dissolved in water and given easily through

the tube. It has helped my son's reflux.

Quick note about any GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) medication. We

went through diagnostics with - ph probe, scoping and stuff, and never

reached a conclusions about using a GERD medication. Finally, as a desperate

attempt to reduce the inflamed airways and what seemed to be chronic asthma, we

tried the Prilosec at 10mg. He improved so greatly (for the first two weeks you

could smell the healing on his breath - much like a person's breath receiving

radiation treatment) and his respiratory symptoms completely vanished - so it

was decided by the change he must have been silently aspirating refluxed stomach

acids.....\\What I am encouraging is to ask to try to see if you get

improvements. There are few measurable negative side effects that I know of,

and none that we have seen ourselves. (Some people supplement with CoQ10).

Best to you-

Hi ,

My daughter is on Prevacid and Metoclopramide for her reflux, and

they have really helped her. I'm giving her breast milk (pumping

and giving it by bottle and gtube). She had her gtube surgery in

June. She'll be 6 months old on 7/16 and is 11 1/2 lbs today. She

is long and skinny too. People always comment on how small she is

and ask if she was a preemie. Our Itty Bitty is small but strong

willed and tough. She has boney choanal atresia on her left side,

but they want to wait and do the surgery when she is about 2 since

she has one good airway.

Hi . We tried Zantac first, and it didnt' work for long. My

understanding is, that this is

common- Zantac doesn't work well. Prevacid helps decrease the

acidity so it doesn't burn

on the way up, but it doesn't stop the reflux. Sam had a gastric

emptying study that diagnosed

delayed stomach emptying, and then was put on Reglan, which helps the

stomach empty quicker

which makes refluxing more difficult (when there's nothing in there

to come back up!) So I would

recommend Reglan and Prevacid- not sure if you need a gastric

emptying study to get it

prescribed, but that test was pretty easy.

Good luck with the reflux and choanal atresia! My son Sam is 18

months now- he had 3 surgeries

on his nose total- it's wide open for a year now, and he's weaned off

all his reflux meds :)

I'm not bragging, I'm hoping sharing our success helps you/everyone

be optimistic!!

Take care,

theresa

Wow, Margaret she's really lucky to be able to wait. Trinity had boney and

tissue on both sides so her first surgery was done at about 7 weeks. I did get

her rx changed to Prevacid and she's still hurling like you wouldn't believe.

The doc thinks she may have a cold. She had stopped eating on Tuesday when I

took her in but is now feeding again. The vomitting is slowing up a bit but I

find myself standing there with a cloth diaper in hand to catch it when the

river cuts loose. She starts coughing and can't stop then out it comes. She

has never had reflux this bad so something is going on with her. Her nose is a

bit runny which is scary since the last time it closed up it started to run but

she is sneezing and has a bit of matter in her eyes so that does suggest a cold

to some extent. Right now I'm concentrating on trying to get a bottle down her

so she doesn't dehydrate. Very VERY scary thing but she is still producing wet

diapers. Not her normal wetness but she

must be keeping some of her food down. I'll just have to keep watching her.

Poor thing is hungry in the middle of the night again so I'm finding a bit of a

setback since she was sleeping all night. Ugggggggh. I'm so tired. Trinity's

weight is now up to 11 pounds 12 ounces so that's good. She will be 7 months on

the 25th.

What kind of drug is Metoclopramide? What's it do exactly? How often is she

taking her Prevacid?

Take Care,

of her situation. He did say a couple of weeks ago that the

passages were still clear and open but narrow and that another (her

3rd) nose surgery was inevitable and we knew that. I/We suspect she

will have many more. Her ENT said that as she grows those passages

will have to be widened anyway. My main concern right now though is

her reflux and getting a handle on it. Nothing like being drenched

in the middle of a feeding or soon thereafter. She needs to keep

the food down so she can gain weight. She is approx 11 1/2 to 12

pounds right now and 6 1/2 months old. I met a woman the other day

who's 3 month old is 16 pounds but a chunk. Trinity is just a

Take Care,

> Hi Everyone!! I'm just wondering what meds other than Zantac are

out there that help fight acid reflux? Trinity has had 2 huge spit

ups late this afternoon and this evening and I would like to call

her doctor tomorrow and see if he will prescribe a new one. One of

her episodes was a bunch of food the other was her soy formula. The

Zantac seems not to be working anymore. She has days where she is

fine but you can hear the girlgling from it in her throat. She also

has a bit of a cough, no fever though. I'm thinking the cough is

related to the reflux. Her nose has been a bit runny again as well

and that concerns me considering she had a bilateral choanal

atresia. She is still feeding well, but I'm still concerned it

could be closing up again and that concern will always be in the

back of my head along with many MANY others. When her nose closed

the last time she had a lot of secretions coming out that got

thicker and thicker. This time not as much (it's runny and

> clear in color) and I'm sure it's not closed off completely

either. Her ENT advised to watch her feedings and of course

secretions from her nose. If it appears she is having problems
