Guest guest
Alissa, We are planning to part time home school Cameron this fall for Kindergarten and send him half day to his DHH program. He'll still get OT, PT and Speech through the school district. I have to keep reminding myself that it's " just Kindergarten " and that he'll be fine. But I also believe it's important for him to have contact with native ASL signers - including one of his friends in class - so I don't want to completely cut that out of his life. However, I don't have much confidence in the educational part of the program so I hope this will give him the best of both worlds for now - this year. He's been in some kind of ASL based intervention program for the last four years and uses ASL to clarify his speech or just when he wants to use it. BTW, how does your son communicate? ASL? Voice? SEE? Cameron has a conductive loss (severe/profound) and we just confirmed today that he's lost more hearing in some frequencies (15-20 db). His audiologist is baffled about this - but she can't figure out why he has the hearing loss he has and how he does so well with it. We just figure it's one of the things that makes him Cameron. We have another son, who will be in second grade and has been home schooled for kindergarten and first grade. It will be interesting to have two in home school. But I'm looking forward to it. We will be at the conference next week so if you are going it would be great to get together and discuss this further. Guest guest
, Thank you for your response. Even though we have been home schoolers for about 7 years now I have been feeling a little bit like a freak since getting out of the program at school. was in a Total Communication classroom for the last two years. Signing was a life saver for us in the beginning just so we could get along in our daily lives. uses his voice almost exclusively now but I continue with signing and speaking. His teacher believes he will soon drop his signing altogether. He has a sensorineural loss, profound in his left ear(everything that has been effected is on the left) and only a very mild loss in his right. He wears hearing aids in both for now. We attend events and activities with people from the deaf cultural, where a lot of signing is going on, but it just doesn't look like that is going to be a fit for him. Even in his classroom his cliques were with the hearing kids and when we talk about the other kids at school he classifies them as deaf, a little deaf, and hearing. He puts himself in the hearing category. I wish I could come to the conference. We live in Las Vegas and it is so close this year. However, my husband started a new job and we are moving to a new house on Aug 14. Way too much going on to travel right now. I too am wondering how it will be adding one more to the mix. Thanks again. Alissa > > Alissa, > > We are planning to part time home school Cameron this fall for > Kindergarten and send him half day to his DHH program.
