Guest guest
a, it sounds to me liek ehat you heard abotu this Endo is from uninformed peolle with not so serious problems as you. I have to say it is unlikley you will find a decent doc on your insurance plan as the GOOD docs usually don't take insurance as they do nto want an insurance company dictating to them what tests they can run, nor what meds they can prescribe nor how often they can see you. I have seen almost NO decent doc in the last few years that accepted any kind of insurance. Which leaves many of us in a really bad place. Pay out of pocket for a decent doctor (IF we can manage that!) or self treat or stay sick. Really not good choices, but choices for life, none the less. I think you have to make this choice and there is no advice we cna give you that will elp this decision as you must do it on your own. Or you can try another Endo, but I have not found Endos to be good doctors at all. I am sickened by this specialty that really is nothing but a snob club. -- Artistic Grooming- Hurricane WV http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NaturalThyroidHormonesADRENALS/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RT3_T3/
Guest guest
Hi ERica, I'm sorry to hear how sick you are feeling. It sounded to me like the original doc who put you on cortef and armour was on track. Seems like taking the cortef by itself for awhile, along with iron supplementation, then later add the armour would be a plan. My iron was low and i've been on ferrous bis-glycinate Ferrochel 27 mg capsules...you can take up to 150-200mg a day to get the iron up. I take it with 1000 mg vit C powder in juice. Be sure to take it away from calcium as calcium inhibits its absorption. I had no constipation and my iron/ferritin has gone up about10 points in 8 weeks, and i was only taking about 60mg per day. Have you heard of WRight? He's an MD very knowlegable in alternative medicine and he has done some case studies with people with hearing loss using aldosterone and having it restore their hearing, so perhaps besides the adrenal/thyroid issues you also have low aldosterone. I'd ask that first doc who gave you the cortef to test for aldosterone or order you some..i'm not sure how to get it but I know there are a couple labs who make it. hang in there and don't give up--i'd stay away from the endos and find a good holistic MD doctor in your town who will work on your hormone system with you using bioidentical hormones instead of synthetics. Guest guest
Hi a, I'm not real knowledgable about all the other hormones, estrogen etc. But I think you just need to slow down and stop going to all kinds of different doctors. The ER doc gave you some scripts. I think you're right to start on cortef 20mg per day 5mg four times a day. At the same time i'd start on some iron, do the vitamin c and others you mentioned. And just give it a few weeks and see if the cortef helps. Write on here again at that point if you need direction on when/how to add in the armour. I don't know anything about the amino acids, but like I said, it might be best to just keep it simple...take the cortef and a couple supplements you KNOW you need, and give it time to work. I hope you feel better soon and that the brain fog lifts a bit with the cortef! Guest guest
Liz, I am woke up less brain fogged(= The reason I had to go into the ER is honestly I could not move without the help of my parents. My BP was so off when getting up I was pratcially fainting. I will take your advice and take the Cortef split up. he had me takig 10 mg in morning and 10 in the afternoon and it was way too much at once. I was short on funds but luckily I found that I have a tad money to get the C and and Iron today. The Endo gave me a packet of labs to take two weeks prior to May 29th. Although he was felt I did not have a thyroid or cortisol issue I am still going to use the lab request because it is testing 20 things and my insurance covers it. Just for clarification testing free cortisol (serum) once I hev taken cortef will be skewed? I also read a post last night on this group regarding Iron. It was said that one should be fasting and look at the saturated levels for the true number. My father has Iron overload and his first cousin as well I believe. I wil start the Iron but maybe low and then raise it up . In regards to the Armour, for now, I think I should hold off until I can get my cortisol a bit better. I was a stage 5 or 6 from results of the salivia test back in this Jan. I will also try adn get the aldosterone and renin checked by the doc this Thursday. Thanks Liz for your time and patiece. a (= > Hi a, > > I'm not real knowledgable about all the other hormones, estrogen > etc. But I think you just need to slow down and stop going to all > kinds of different doctors. Guest guest
Since your adrenals are so burnt out it makes sense you are having major BP problems...the adrenals also produce aldosterone and this is the one that apparently helps with hearing...so maybe by taking the cortef to support your adrenals, the hearing issue will also improve. I know I used to get majorly dizzy going from sitting to standing up, but after just a couple weeks on cortef, it went away. I'm not saying it will resolve that quickly for you, but it should help anyway! You can always slowly ramp up the cortef too. I think I took 15 mg split 3 times in the day for a few weeks before going to 20mg. Your iron, and saturated % and ferritin are all VERY low...you are not at risk of high iron! I wouldn't worry about taking 100mg anyway, with the C, and then re-test if you can in a couple months to see if you're absorbing and if iron is going up. always recommends getting cortisol and iron levels up before starting armour so that sounds like a good plan. For iron she told me to at least have ferritin up at 30. However, I didn't follow her advice and did start on armour before that, but just on 1/4 grain (i have been losing hair and just wanted to start the armour to help with that), plus my TSH was 7.9 so I really wanted to start it lowering. But, everyone is different, so I think your plan is a good one. You also are taking other meds so you want to go slow to watch for interactions i'm guessing. You may be able to decrease any anti- depressants after being on cortef for awhile...I know it helped me big time with negative thoughts and depression. take care and keep in touch...i'll be curious to know about the aldosterone test. Maybe you should wait and start the cortef after your Thursday test...but i'd ask valerie about that. Even though the cortef might skew your serum cortisol...if you're not having that test till the end of May i'd just start cortef so you can begin feeling better, especially since you have saliva results already and know you need the cortef!
