Guest guest
My dd has Hashi's....takes Cytomel and has weaned off HC a few months ago and doing ok. She wants to take Accutane for her acne. I know! I know!....horrific. I don't want her to take it but she's an adult now, and not much I can say or do. Anyone had experience with this drug? Will it totally fry her adrenals or thyroid? I confess I haven't done much research....I tend to want to hear the opinions of this board first, before beginning all the reading. You all are always soooo on the mark. Thanks for any advice or words of caution I can pass on to her. Naffy
Guest guest
It absolutely will compound her problems. Accutane is retinoic acid,a megadose form of vitamin A - Vit A is not water soluble in the body and is stored in the liver. Those with adrenal/thyroid already have problems clearing the liver, and hormones, as well as Vit A build up there, causing more stagnation, toxicity etc. I used Accutane for about 5 months and towards the end of that period, I was diagnosed with Graves Disease which set on immediately after a short period of pseudo cerebri tumor (brain swelling) a nasty side effect of Accutane. I would never take it again, and I would advise no one else ever should. It should be illegal. There are many many issues with this drug - some people's lives have been devatstated. Guest guest
Search for message 33975. Seems like it started his adrenal/thyroid problems. I would stay away from it. Guest guest
Wow...had no idea it was so bad. A lot of her friends have taken it with no side effects. I'll definitely forward this to her. Thanks, Naffy > > > > My dd has Hashi's....takes Cytomel and has weaned off HC a few > months > > ago and doing ok. > > > > She wants to take Accutane for her acne. I know! I > > know!....horrific. Guest guest
My son took accutane and had all kinds of bad effects from it. He lost lots of hair (in chunks). It stayed thin afterwards. It did clear up the acne, but now (10 years later) he has really dry skin. It basically kills the oil glands -- I wonder if the skin of these kids will look old prematurely because of that. The worst effect for him was that it prematurely closed his growth plates. He took it in junior high and never grew another inch since he took it. He's much shorter than the rest of the family. Have your daughter google it. She will read about all of those side effects and more! There is so much info out there from people who have used it and regretted it. Had I known ANY of this, I would never have let him use it, but those were the very early days and we didn't know. (BTW, bilberry is very effective against acne!)
