Guest guest
Hi, I don't think I've ever posted here before, but always read the posts to learn more, lots of great info in this group!! I have Hashimoto's, low ferritin, and have had and still have on and off problems with my adrenals - low cortisol levels. I've been reading alot about Iodoral and really would like to try it, but have heard mixed things about taking iodine when you have antibodies (Hashi's). Does anyone know if its OK to take this when you have antibodies?? I'm currently on Armour thyroid for my thyroid, iron supplements w/vit. C for my ferritin, and hydrocortisone as needed when I'm feeling sick or stressed out. I'm also supposed to be taking Thyrosol and Adrenogen per doc, but have been slacking lately....... Anyway, I just don't want to start taking Iodoral and have more problems with my thyroid. Yet from everything I've read, it seems like it would help me so much and I really want to try it! If anyone can shed some light on this for me and if anyone can help me with sharing their experiences, that would be great!! Thanks so much! -Marcy
Guest guest
Marcy, Use caution with iodine. I and many other Hashi's have had adverse symptoms from taking it. There are hundreds of studies showing how iodine can cause/exacerbate Hashi's, and I would be more than happy to give you the links if you email me privately. And there are no studies proving that it's always safe for hashi's to take it. Several people on other groups I'm on have ended up in the ER with hyper symptoms, one with thyroid storm, which is life-threatening. And many hashi's unknowingly are positive for TSI antibodies, which is a marker for Grave's disease, and iodine is like poison for Grave's. Do you know if you have TSI antibodies? Do your own research and study on this and don't go just by what others tell you. I wish I had done this before taking the bad advice I got. Guest guest
Cindy and Marcy-- My experience w/ iodine is that it made my hypo symptoms much much worse. I've been diagnosed w/ Hashi's, but am confused now. They only tests they ran were thyroglobulin antibody (388, range being 0-20) and Thyroid Peroxidase ( 54, range being 0-34). Am I missing a test? seems like it. Also thinking that first reading is so out of range....what does that mean? > > Several people on other groups I'm on have ended up in the ER with > hyper symptoms, one with thyroid storm, which is life-threatening. > > And many hashi's unknowingly are positive for TSI antibodies, which is > a marker for Grave's disease, and iodine is like poison for Grave's. > Do you know if you have TSI antibodies? >
Guest guest
Yes, it looks like you have hashi's and you are missing a test. Most experts agree that Hashi's and Grave's are overlapping diseases. The marker for Grave's are the TSI antibodies. Any number over 2% is considered potential Grave's and many hashi's have crossed that line by taking iodine. So you should get a TSI done, since it's possible being positive for TSI is one of the reasons some go hyper with the iodine. The studies show that even if you weren't previously hypo or hashi's, that iodine can CAUSE both of those to happen. People should have the option of trying iodine, but they should be fully informed of all sides of the issue before taking a possible risk. Guest guest
I forgot to ask you--did they test your TSH, fT3, fT4? Guest guest
Cindy--Thanks for the heads up. THE iodine made me feel more hypo, not hyper so I'm a little confused. Need to read more, I know, but any help you can give would be appreciated. And if I had graves wouldn't my tsh at some point have been low? Mine's only ever been elevated. Guest guest
Iodine can CAUSE hypoT. And yes, if your TSH is elevated, then you are not hyper. But people with TSI can swing between hyper and hypo, so it's important to know if you are positive for those. Cindy > > > > Yes, it looks like you have hashi's and you are missing a test. Guest guest
Yes, they've been testing them for years. The lowest TSH ever was 2.3 and the highest was 8.3 w/ a reference range of .35-5.5. My most current free t3 was 247.8 ( 230-420) My free T4 was .88 ( .71-1.85) > > I forgot to ask you--did they test your TSH, fT3, fT4? > > Cindy
Guest guest
Makes total sense. Thanks for your help. I have felt hyper over the years, but I think it just feels so darned good after the hypo, and is so much more socially acceptable that I ignored it. The hypo symptoms are the more prevalent. I'll request the other test. Is the treatment the same if you're swinging between graves and hashis? armour? > > Iodine can CAUSE hypoT. And yes, if your TSH is elevated, then you > are not hyper. Guest guest
Well, the treatment is tricky if you swing, which a lot of hashi's do. Presently I'm on nothing, since Armour caused my thyroid to swell and my throat was painful and difficult to swallow, plus it made my hyper for a couple of months even though I only took it 3 days. So I'm not a good one to ask about that. But from what I've read from people with hashi's, you need to be in tune with your body and aware of symptoms that could be indicating you are going hypo or hyper and adjust your doses accordingly. Now there are studies proving that taking 200 mcg. of selenium daily can drastically reduce the antibodies, so you might want to do that. Avoid iodized salt, use Celtic or other sea salt. And many people have had great success totally getting off gluten and wheat products, since gluten has been proven to exacerbate inflmmatory conditions such as hashi's. Cindy > > Makes total sense. Guest guest
Definitely looks like you are hypo since your TSH always stays above 2. Your frees are low also. Guest guest
If you have Hashis it probably isn't a good idea. Seems like almost everyone with Hashis that I've heard talk about using iodine supplements had problems with it. Others who don't have Hashis seem to do well with it mostly. Of course that is an individual thing. I would definately research more before trying though. I'm curious how you are dosing your HC.
