SHelly,

When was trached, she to had a short neck and at times when she

coughed or tilted her head down the chin would cover the trach! The good news

is

that since her trach came out (4 years ago June 8th!) she has developed a

neck! It is rally great.

OK so the soars, if the trach ties are to tight, this can make it red, we

used to always keep a 2 x 2 split guaze under it. At times of excess secretions

it would get soar and we would apply ointment, bacitracin. Also, perhaps

you may need a longer trach size this is something your ENT should be able to

help you with.

Hope this helps

I second Cathie's advise. We used 2 by's always, and changed them

frequently.

And a longer trach will prevent you from having to tie so tight.

I think I remember being told-don't use vaseline.

But the trach stoma is one place where you don't want the skin to break down.
