Thanks, Michele! I sent that link on to the Deaf School. Hopefully they

will look it over and realize better what we need for . I have

mentioned the non-serif fonts and they have said, if it is larger, no matter

what the font type, it shouldn't matter.

edresearch/lpguide.htm Guidelines for Large Print

This is a short article with guidelines for using Large Print for Low

Vision. I thought of Marilyn when I read it. I hope it's helpful to

someone out there. I plan to pass it along to Aubrie's regular ed teacher's

next year.

Marilyn-

Well, I'm glad it was helpful to you. At least, I hope it will be. As with

everything else, it's amazing to find out how much there is to know about

something I didn't understand as an outsider. Who knew that so many things

could impact the use of large print? It's hard enough to get folks to

understand why our kids need it - even if it appears that they " can " read

regular print. Once you get them understanding the need for large print,

then you have to get them to understand what " large print " really means -

more than just enlarging.

Aubrie got the large print copy of the standardized tests this year. They

had just enlarged the entire thing in b&w - which isn't much help with

colored photos and graphs! Eegads!! And this was direct from the testing

folks - not something the school did. You would think those folks would do

it right. How can you answer the question about the " Blue bar on the graph "

when there is no color??

Know what you mean about the testing folks and " enlarging " , but I'm stunned

about the color graph thing! That's incredibly (stupidly?!?) amazing!

had the SAT-HI and I'm sure it wasn't enlarged appropriately - if at

all.

I asked the dorm staff tonight about 's homework. They said she has

very little homework in the evening, so they aren't sure what fonts are

being used. She aso asked if I'd heard they are supposed to be getting the

typing program for to practice using/learning this week. It has

only been since November!!! They are out of school May 24th. I will be

having to see if I can get a copy for her to practice over the Summer.

Highly doubtful, since they couldn't even get it to another part of the

school in all these months! Wish me luck.

I'm hopeful that we can gt them to understand the large print issues better

now. (But I'm not holding my breath!)

Marilyn-

What typing program will you be using? We're still working on that as well.

We had used Keyboard Coach but ISD doesn't like it. I don't know what they

do instead - I think just using Word.

I'm not sure since I can't get an answer about her using it! It is one they

say she will use in high school, so I'm guessing it might be MS Word. But

that doesn't build proficiency on the keyboard, just how to use the program.

Im just going to pipe in here.... HELL YES IT DOES! sorry for shouting. Try

reading a large print page in Arial and the same page with the same sized

serif font... it matters! At least to me, I prefer reading serif fonts

then sans-serif (ariel).

Chantelle-

As always, your opinion and experience matters more than any " official "

report. You know, Arial is my favorite font. I may have to change that.

What is the best for you?

Hmmm I have a few favorites. when I am reading emails all my email text is

all ready in sarif fonts, if that is your reason for considering changing

fonts. My favorite font of the normal serif fonts is Georgia font. There are

fancy fonts too that are serif that I like, but Georgia is a common font

with PC computers and for use on websites. That font actualy enlarges well

for photocopying. I prefer that one over times new roman even though they

are quite similar.

I like Ariel if its just a line or two, something like you might see on a

flyer, but definatly for large blocks of text I like using Georgia.

Just curious, really. I will see if Aubrie likes it as well. What do you

think of the APhont?

No - it's a font that's available by free download from the American

this is an interesting thread... not sure why it caught my eye out of the

2500 emails i have in my inbox right now -- but i thought i'd pipe in - in

my college Tech Communications class one of the big things stressed was the

type of paper and font you use and how it affects the effectivness of your

communications... i found it interesting especially because the very book

that said serif fonts and non-glossy paper were best for ease of reading,

retention of material and preventing eyestrain was printed in sans serif

font and on high gloss paper... go figure huh?

just somethin that occured to me as i followed this thread
