Hi - my MIL had some new labs done, her current dose is 75 ug

Synthroid with 1/2 grain Armour.

Free T3 - 273 (230-420)

Free T4 - 1.31 (.93-1.70)

TSH - .12 (.27 - 4.20)

The TSH was flagged low and now the doctor wants her to lower her

dose to 25 ugs synthroid and 1/4 grain of Armour! she will probably

become comatose taking that.

Also she had Sodium and Potassium done:

sodium 137 (136-145)

potassium 3.5 (3.4-3.5)

are these low?

also she did the saliva test last year

Cortisol Saliva (ng/ml)

(optimal range) (observed range)

7:00 AM 10.9 (7-10) (8-15)

11:00 AM 2.3 (3-6) (3-7)

5:00 PM 1.8 (2-4) (2-4)

10:00 PM 1.7 (<1.5) (<1.5)

I asked them to do a Ferritin test but from the lab report it looks

like they decided not to. She's also low on Vitamin D.

any advice? she really likes her doctor, she's a Top Doc so I don't

understand why she is dropping the dose so low.

I would tell her to lower the SYnthroid as her T3 is high enough but her

T3 is VERY low already. She needs the Armour. She also needs adrenal;

support, is she taking anything for that?

This is NOT a Top Doc if she's basing dosing on TSH! Why don't more

docs know this? I just got a blood TSH of .03 (.4-4.5), but a saliva

TSH of 175 (26-85). Blood says to lower my dose, saliva says to

raise it! Symptoms say to raise, and that's what they should really

go by.

Her T3 is low enough that she should just stop the Synthroid and take

only Armour. Maybe start with 1 grain and increase gradually,

monitoring with temps.

Sodium and potassium are very low and she should take sea salt and

eat high potassium foods like bananas. She must feel dehydrated all

the time.

She also needs adrenal support--is she on Isocort or HC now?

If she's low on Vit D, get some late afternoon sun! With daylight

savings, we are getting decent sun after 4 p.m.!

Do not let them lower her dose if at all possible. She is

undermedicated now as it is, and if she goes lower, may develop more

problems. My dose was lowered twice because of TSH until I developed

asthma and adrenal fatigue.

you meant T4 high enough right?

so keep taking 1/2 grain Armour and lower Synthroid to maybe 50 ugs?

she's not on any adrenal support, she tried Isocort and it gave her

headaches. When I posted her saliva results previously, you thought

they looked good.

thanks!

thanks Barb - I just asked her if she feels dehydrated and she says

she always has a dry mouth and throat that makes her cough. she

keeps complaining of a headache too. could it be from being low on

sodium/potassium or T3?

Sodium and potassium are very low and she should take sea salt and

eat high potassium foods like bananas. She must feel dehydrated

all the time.

Hypo headaches are very common, and yes, her T3 is very low.

Dehydration causes headaches. She gets the benefit of BOTH! And if

her dose is cut, she will get worse.
