insurance vs. medicaid

We've just been informed that Jack qualifies for straight medicaid. They told

us that we can stop paying for private insurance. I wanted some advice about

this. Has anyone lost doctors by making a switch like this? Also, has anyone

not been able to get a specialist because of medicaid? It would be nice to have

an extra $300/month but it isn't worth it if it is going to compromise Jack's

care. I'd like to know what your experiences are with medicaid.

Thanks!

I don't know where you live. We live in Rochester NY. I carry

private insurance on my daughter. She also has medicaid. The county

gives us the difference between a 2 person plan and a family plan. It

is more cost effective for them to pay the difference rather then just

have her on medicaid. They have been doing this since she was 18. She

is now 24. Hope this helps,

The doctor I work for doesn't accept medicaid if it is a patient's only

insurance. I wouldn't drop private insurance too quickly. I'd check

with Jack's current specialists, as well as other he might have to see

somewhere down the line (there could be many!). You might find your

choices very limited.

What state are you in? There may be an organization like Family Voices that

could help you sort out the pros and cons of such a decision. From what

I've heard, you are right to be cautious about canceling your private

insurance. I think there can be serious consequences down the road that may

not be readily apparent right now.
