Guest guest
Marilyn, Isn't medication ultimately your decision? I would research abilify in terms of 's individual expression of Charge, just to be sure there are no contraindications. Then, present the manual portions that explain that Chargers typically have atypical medication reactions, and the listserv reports on the successes realized with abilify, (and maybe there are also adverse reports re; whatever she is on now, to be had from the list.) And make your case. Lots of times summer is a good time to do it, as academic pressures are less or absent, and just generally less pressure in the daily activities. One consideration on the other side, is how long and how difficult it might be to wean her off whatever she is taking now, as there are different classes of psychotropic drugs, each acting on a different set of brain/body chemistry. I don't understand why, if you are not satisfied with the results of a certain med, that you should not reserve the right to change. I would want to hear very compelling facts from the doctor before abandoning the notion of change. (Opinion only, of course, and a little Mom support in your corner) ;-) in Ma. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
: Yes, it is ultimately our decision. But the school psych was suggesting it based on behaviors and reports from school staff (funny, never any reported problems from dorm staff!). Rick and I felt we needed to at least try to see if it helped in the academic setting. (It didn't.) At one meeting, the staff indicated it needed to be increased due to behaviors escalating again. We flatly refused - and in talking with the psych and presenting that she has no problems anywhere except in class, the doc actually reduced the dosage. We will not be sending any psych meds with back to school this Fall. If they don't have it in the health center, they can't give it! Guest guest
Ellen: All good ideas: I had given them all the articles (and then some!). I had " warned " them for 3 years that behaviors might pop up. I tried to get them to understand multi-sensory impairments and how behaviors can manifest from that, as well as the other issues in CHARGE. We had Tim H. and Meg H. actually do a presentation in Indiana about CHARGE (sort of a 101) and behaviors back in November of 2006. They even consulted with the school staff " privately " (I.E.: Not a public forum). The school still doesn't get it. I am really frustrated at this point about even getting the next case conference scheduled.
