Hello. I am glad to have found this group as it has already been very helpful!

Anyway the short story for me is that I have probably had very poor

adrenals/thyroid issues my whole life. My last tsh was 124...just 2 weeks ago.

My current doc has me on Armour at 2 grains....Over the course of the last

year...(in April 2007 my tsh was >150) I don't feel like much progress has been

made. After doing personal research like we all seem to have to do, I suggested

to my MD that I do a trial of HC to see if there is any improvement for my

energy. (I feel like it is so hard to focus and actually think a lot of the

time. I have gained weight now, as last year I was barely at 103 and now at

almost 120 for 4'11''. I feel so puffy all the time, my feet are edematous, and

I don't usually sleep well.) Anyway, he gave me Isocort, and it was nice for a

very short time and now, I feel like I had before. Blahhhhhhh. Moody, sad alot,

ect....And NO energy!.

So my MD's idea after this last test of 124 was to stop all the compounded

armour and if I am having symptoms then go back on it (and he knew I was having

symptoms on it), but come in on friday to have labs rechecked. All the time I

am telling him, I don't feel well, I am circling the drain, what else can I do

to feel better that is more natural/holistic in nature? I lasted four days

without armour and took it because I was trying to force myself to go into work.

I ended up missing work all last week due to how bad I feel. I am frustrated.

I know that you all understand. If anyone has any advice I am open ears.

May we all feel the health that we were born to have!

Your body is screaming for more thyroid, but do you have enough

cortisol to handle a raise? Get your own tests done for about $140+

if your own doctor won't do it from here:

http://canaryclub.org/

Have your doc run blood Free T3, Free T4, TSH, and antibodies. The

tests at Diagnos-Techs will also give you sex hormone and adrenal

status to further diagnose your particular problem.

Have you ever tried raising past 2 grains? Any problems?

Your doc is basically incompetent if he told you stop Armour with a

TSH over 100!

Hi Barb,

Thanks for your reply. here are my latest cortisol results: from January

2008

4.1...... 6:30 am ((7-10 normal)

2.1 ......11:00am (3.0-6.0normal)

2.8.......5:00pm (2-4 normal)

0.8.......10:00pm (<1.5 normal)

My t3 and t4 were also out of whack at my last visit....but I did not write

down those results. My DHEA is 241.7 with optimal ranges at 200-400. My Gaba

is also low (which probably explains why I can not relax! I also had a high

perioxidase whatever that means. I am so tense most of the time and also very,

very moody, alternating between anger and utter sadness.

I can't believe that he would want me to actually stop all the thyroid

replacement and try to come in to his office over a week later and have more lab

tests done. It made no sense to me at all. When I dragged myself in there on

Friday, the nurse says to me what's wrong, and I said " My tsh is 124, I feel

like I am circling the drain....she said oh, that's a good way to put it....BUT

no body called the doctor. My very good friend has a TSH of 7 something and she

feels like crap...when I told her my number she was floored.

I know my body is screaming for this stuff, but I am unsure if my cortisol

levels are low enough for HC rather than Isocort which is really not doing much

right now, and would that make any difference for me. I will tell you that

when I started on Armour I have actually gotten worse. My edema has increased,

weight climbing, my fingernails are actually separating from the nail bed (white

nail syndrome known in hypothyroidism.) I am desparate for refreshing sleep.

And I have been thinking about having to go out on leave from work until this is

better. I feel that this worsening is probably due to my very taxed adrenal

glands, as I have read from Dr. Broda , we shouldn't attempt to fix the

thyroid until the adrenals have been boosted. I should also mention that I lost

my hair at age 3, it was never found out why and they labeled it as stress.

Interestingly enough, the one time I had cortisone shots when I was about 6 it

grew for a little while, then fell out

again. For now I have a little bit left.....

So, it seems that I have been screaming for thyroid hormone for a very, very

long time as I am 37. My grandmother has this as does my mother.

As for the sex hormone testing I have not done that yet. I did try

progesterone cream short term and did not have a good reaction....boobs hurt and

swelling increased.

Thank you for reading......and your assistance!

Yes, your labs say you need HC. I would transition over.

This is another clue your adrenals are too weak to tolerate any

thyroid right now.

This will improve once you are able to tolerate adequate thyroid.

If this is at all possible for you economically, it would greatly

speed your recovery. I have the " luxury " of being laid off, but the

freedom to rest has meant a speedier recovery for me.

Good luck!

Hi,

I'm not Barb, but I would say you definately need HC. The Isocort is most

likely not strong enough for you with those levels. You are most likely not

tolerating the Armour well because of the low cortisol levels. Have you had

other levels checked like ferritin, B-12, potassium, and sodium,

Aldosterone, renin? If you could go of the isocort and have an ACTH stim

test done it could help you reule out or deterimen pituitary problems. The

perioxidase is most likely the thyroid antibodies which would mean that you

have Hashimotos. That would mean you need to have your TSH as close to 0 as

you can get it in order to stop the antibodies from attacking your thyroid.

I have no idea why he woule want you to stop your thyroid meds in order to

do testing. Sounds like you need more thyroid, not less. You very well may

have to wait until you get your adrenal glands supported correctly before

getting your thyroid where it should be.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy

enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright
