Hi,

Just got back Amita's WISC IV test results. This is a standardized

intelligence test that measures IQ. Has any other kid here been

administered the test? This was done as a part of the IEP evaluation

procedure. The diagnostician who administered it knew Amita's problems

and has noted that in her report and clearly stated that she has

hearing and vision problems that affected the score. I am feeling very

ambivalent at this time about the score and its use. If anyone has any

experience with it please post me a reply.

It takes a lot of experience and expertise to administer and score the WISC

IV with someone who has sensory impairments, and this is particularly

difficult when a person has both hearing and vision problems. I tend to

wonder about the purpose and benefit of giving the test. You can email me

privately if you want to discuss the particulars.

Deepta,

I have to agree with Tim on this one... The last WISC had was two years

ago for his triennial.. The guy who did it was an psych intern who just seemed

to 'get it'.. He stated in his report that had a hearing loss and that the

test was not indicative of intelligence, that from what he had seen that

was above average and a lot smarter than he wanted to let people know.

Our kids don't do 'normal' tests in the way they were intended... Our kids

don't do 'average'.. Our kids don't do 'age equivalent'... Our kids don't do

'grade average'..... Our kids do what they do when they do it.. not before,

not after... But they do and keep on doing.

PS: Tim you would LOVE having this guy working with you.. he's one who 'gets

it'

I agree. Get in touch with Tim right away.

When Patty was in second grade I also called a PPT meeting and insisted

" scores " not be in Patty's file, anywhere. If they used those scores she would

have been placed in a separate class, within the school building, for children

who were retarded. I threw out the scores and had them use running records.

Goals and objectives need to be individual and attainable and not

" disabling. "

Within the Federal Laws as your child's guardian and advocate you can insist

on removing those scores. Put it in writing, dated, and get it in writing.

The only eval we used was Perkins when Patty was 14. Again they describe

the limited educational access due to Patty's individual disability.

She graduated with a regular ed diploma.

Good luck.

Again, get in touch with Tim.
