Guest guest
Last night around 6:30 pm and extending into the night, JD developed what we believe and his pediatrician Dr. Shirley Joslin believes is his first known allergic reaction to a drug which was prescribed for him by a GI doctor in Dallas at Childrens Medical Center on Wednesday during his visit there. We are almost positive that he is allergic to this medication and have discontinued it after just 1 dose which occurred last night. We were unable to see Dr. Andersen who is his GI doctor and we saw another on Wednesday however, and due to this development last night we have talked to Dr. Andersen many times and have requested that since Dr. Andersen is the most familiar with JD's complexities that we see him solely and he has agreed to that. Dr. Andersen will be the only doctor in the GI specialty that will be dealing with JD's medical case from here on out. We spoke with Dr. Andersen on the phone for advice multiple times last night and on into the morning today. He is continuing to call this afternoon to check up on JD. What we experienced was very scary and serious with JD and we were very close to taking him into the hospital. JD experienced tachycardia with heart rate into the 180's bpm range and up for nearly 45 minutes. JD was fine with his respirations however his spit ups and throwing up increased to three to four instances after the dose was given. JD is normally a peach color in skin and for about two hours his color would change to a more dark pink which is abnormal for him. He also experienced dry mouth or cotton mouth. This drug has also had an adverse effect on his secretions that we are getting from his trach and nose. His secretions are thicker in both and there are more of them. Let me emphasize that JD's lungs are clear but his secretions are increased and we have been advised that those need to watched by Dr. Andersen, Dr. Gelfand (his pulmonologist) and Dr. Joslin. At this time, we have not had to increase JD's breathing treatments but we will if we need too. The drug in question was prescribed to help him with his spitting up which I believe we relayed to you that at this time JD is not holding his foods real well. All doctors have agreed that JD is probably allergic to this medication. JD is holding his own right now. We have not been very successful today with JD's trach trials off the vent and we have kept him on the vent most of today and will probably continue that into tomorrow. His heartrate is normal but his secretions coming from the trach and lungs are thicker and there are more of them than normal. JD is alert and sitting and he has been playing some today with his toys. We are just happy that he is doing better and we understand now that we have probably found his first medicinal allergy. Mandy and I have been concerned since yesterday at about 6 pm. I have even thought about discontinuing my mental preparation for my upcoming nasal and sinus surgery. We have put this matter in Gods hands and we understand that His will we be done. JD is doing okay he just isnt quite himself. If he continues to improve as he has slowly, I will continue to prepare for this upcoming nose procedure. I understand that it must be done for my sake and ultimately for the sake and health of my son JD. We wanted to let you know and we apologize for not calling but when we are asked to react quickly in a serious situation as was last night, there isnt time to call when you have to take care of your critically ill son. After the situation is resolved, Mandy and I need time to calm our emotions down. Most of the situations that we go through that are serious with JD's care are very stressful and very emotional and both of us need time before we can talk about it. We still thought it was appropriate to let you know. JD will pull through this and he should be back to his old self by Monday. Keep praying and Keep believing. , Mandy, Olivia (22 months today) and Barton (cHArgEd 22months today) ************************************** Get a sneak peak of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
