Unfortunately there are many people who rush out and buy supplements, minerals, hormones, etc. and start using them without any testing or knowledge of what they are doing and can end up with more problems than they started with. There's a wealth of info out there but many times people don't look into the details, they start something on the advice of a couple of people or from an article or two they read.
