Why Low Ferritin creates a problem

I'm interested in why low ferritin causes problems with thyroid hormone uptake.

As I understand ferritin, it is the extra storage of iron (?) and not the whole

iron situation so it doesn't seem logical to me that just the storage portion of

iron could have such an adverse affect. It would make more sense if iron is low

overall, no?
