Any connection between feeling hypo and getting period?

I got my period yesterday and today feel really hypo. Woke up with puffy eyes

that won't go away. Terrible headache. Could this be related?

I also had to travel and felt very low cortisol yesterday but didn't stress dose

as I'm already on highish dose of HC (37.5). I wonder if this is making me feel

hypo (body used to higher HC so thinks it needs even more for stresses like

travel) or does my period have something to do with it?

I think my electrolytes are fine b/c my BP is good. My legs aren't swelling,

either, just my eyes and my terrible headache. Salt didn't help the headache.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Kathleen

i just asked a similar question on the rth forum. i know some people need more

hc around their period because of the higher levels of progesterone and

estrogen. i just get so sick around my period, always have. someone on rth said

it was probably related to me still being hypo and that once you get the thyroid

straightened out the sex hormones usually fall into place (all of mine are low).

so, i'm hoping that is what happens with me.

maybe you should have stress dosed yesterday since you were traveling & getting

ready to start your period. but i don't know for sure. i'm probably too quick to

stress dose sometimes. the moderators might have other suggestions.

I woudl tend to try potassium for feelign bad around your period. Do

you tend to lose iron? That si another consideration with periods.

Progesterone drops when you start your period. Are you on any replacement

therapy? I had those symptoms, too, from low progesterone. I got what a doc

called pituitary headaches then, between the brows and at the center of my

forehead. Only salt or potassium relieved them. Progesterone greatly helped

relieve swelling. Salt only made me swell more until I got on enough

progesterone. I also needed Florinef, even though BP was normal and aldosterone

tested at 13. If you don't support weak adrenals and thyroid well enough,

periods WILL slay you. FWTW Irene

Thanks, Val.

Potassium helps with feeling bad around your period?

I only recently got to the point where I started holding iron thanks to finally

getting onto enough t3. In fact, my iron was too high now, so you told me to

stop iron supps and retest in a month, which I was planning to do after this

period is over.

So I will see if I am holding iron or not when the labs come back. It may be I

need to take SOME iron on a daily basis, just not 200 mg anymore.

I think I should have stress dosed, too. In the past,it seems I always needed a

bit more cortisol around my period for some reason and add the trip to

that...disaster!!

Thank you. I'm on .125 Florinef and sodium and potassium levels were great last

time I checked a couple weeks ago.

Yes, I supp PG last 2 weeks of cycle and keep it at high end of luteal phase, so

I don't think that was it. Although I did lower the dose this month as last

cycle I tested over range for PG during the luteal phase, so maybe I actually

needed the higher dose? Not sure as my period itself was actually easier and

less cramping and no breast swelling during my period, all of which are signs

for me that I'm not on enough PG. So maybe it is just low cortisol, from the

stress and the period and then not stress dosing for any of it.

Oops, I guess I should have opened the link before asking about potassium and

periods!!

Okay, I read the article. Since my RBC potassium has consistantly tested near

the very top of the range and this was just a couple weeks ago, I tend to think

low potassium is not causing the problem.

I feel hypo with a " hypo head " and my pulse is only 64. (My mercury thermometer

broke here so I can't take temps until I am able to actually leave the hotel and

go buy a thermometer.)

If I needed a stress dose and didn't take one, would that stop the t3 from

getting into the cells and make me feel hypo?

Or do you think I just DID go hypo because I need to raise t3 a bit? I am on

87.25, just bumped it by 6.25 about a week ago.

Another option: I could take iron supps right now while I'm on my period, then

stop again for 5 days and do another iron panel.

The ONLY thing I have changed is that I started metformin (1000 mg a day) to get

my BG down about a week ago. That wouldn't make me go hypo, though, would it?? I

felt BETTER when I first started taking it and had more energy and felt the need

for less HC. I think it's because the glucose was in my blood and not getting to

my cells.

Thanks,

Kathleen
