Guest guest
Hello, Some people get the hair loss from any change in t3 meds, up or down. So hang in there! I am sure as you increase it will get better. Also as you get the iron up as you may not be utilizing the t3 well with low iron. What iron are you taking? It needs to be the iron bisglycinate (ferrochel). That one won't hurt your stomach and yes, you need to be taking more like 150 a day and you have to take it 4 hours from t3. Or take your t3 1 hour before. So I used to take my t3 in the AM, then iron with breakfast, then take the rest of my iron at dinner which was 1 hour after I took my t3 at night. And still gave me time to take the t3 at bedtime. Okay, sometimes I only wait 3 hours on the iron because I don't think Ferrochel binds to meds. I've studied it. But I don't know what you're taking and 2 hours is not long enough for sure! Oh, and iodoral is heavily frowned on over here as it just promotes more t4 and you don't want that when you have a rt3 problem! How long have you been at that dose? You probably read on Nick's page that you are chasing the decaying t4 when you take cynomel, SO you may need to raise because what happens is that you have to take t3 increases fast enough to keep up with the decaying t4 or else you go even more hypo than you were when you started. Does that make sense? Everyone is diffreent how fast they need to and can increase and I know you have the low iron issue, too, but it sounds like you need to raise if it's been more than 5 days. Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, Thanks so much for the information.....I really appreciate it. My doc wants me on this dose for two weeks...and as I'm hearing you, I ought to be upping it. I'm afraid I'll run out and she won't write another scrip for it... I'm taking it sublingually, as in reading Nick's posts here, he'd written that it won't meet in the gut that way? Am I reading that incorrectly? I know the iodoral thing worries me....but it gives me such good energy and dealt so well with the painful breast tissue thing. You think I ought to just quit it and see how it goes? The hair thing just makes me nuts. I'm so lacking in it right now, and so missing my old me, you know? I can only speak for myself being in week 3, but with some of our symptoms getting worse when we are gradually increasing, the question of 'if we are chasing our t4" is the golden question. Do we increase because we are chasing the t4 or do we hold it b/c we are increasing too quickly. This is what I find as being the difficult portion of assessing everything. Thank you moderators for guiding us. I had such a horrible day yesterday, I couldn't figure out whether I was chasing t4, if I couldn't tolerate the t3, if I should increase to feel better or if I increased, I would be adding too fast. This is all very difficult!!!Just had to add in my .02 cents/frustration!!!NanciTo: RT3_T3 Sent: Wed, August 25, 2010 11:45:59 PMSubject: Re: Help! First few days on cytomel....what is going on? Guest guest
Hi Nanci, I'm not a mod, just thought I should tell you that. :-) I *think* that if you are chasing the decaying t4, you'll just feel hypo with low but stable temps and maybe they are stable but gradually going lower even. With intolerance or raising too fast, you will feel almost hyper like symptoms -- wired, anxious, etc. as well as being hypo! And your temps may become unstable due to adrenals not being able to keep up with the increasing t3 levels. I know it is complicated. I am currently stuck in the same position. Feel like I almost there and need to bump as I'm tired, depressed and my temps are only 98.4, but suddenly having anxiety, etc., so trying to figure out what is causing it -- iron, cortisol or blood sugar. Hang in there. I've had plenty of glimpses of what it will feel like to be normal again. It's just that it's like 2 steps forward, 1 back, but I think we will get there eventually. Guest guest
Oh Kathleen, I Soooo hope we will all 'get there' it's so darn disheartening to watch the hair vanish, the waist size appear, and the slip evaporate! I looked at the iron I'm taking and it's called feru-sol. Also spoke to my doc. yesterday about increasing my dose of both progesterone creme, and cytomel...she, of course, wants me to stay at the 25mcg for ten days. I'm tempted to increase. I did take TWO of the iron pills yesterday, but I think I'll have to look into the iron you all take as well, not to put to fine a point on it, but I can't take the erm....waiting, so to speak. :-( So do you think I ought to increase the cytomel by a 1/4 or so for the next five days? I'm so bummed by the frontal hair decrease, and worried it's going to get so much worse. Yesterday was awful in that regard. I'm also wondering on the iodoral stuff....one site, adrenals says; YEAH GO FOR IT! and then this one sayd NO HORRORS stay AWAY from it. Other places say it's woohoo and still others say NO. SOOO hard to know what to do....and what NOT to do, as the fall out (no pun) is so hard to figure out. I'm wondering if I ought to also do the sea salt thing I've read about...I do have some lovely himalayan pink sea salt.... Ok...babble babble...I have to haul my bike off to BART and get on in to work. FRIDAY! Thank you Nanci, I KNOW! Chase, catch, release...I feel like I'm fishing now. With a bad pole and line that has been sitting in the garage too long. Guest guest
Hello, If your temps are stable for at least 5 days (varying by no more than .2 degrees F) then it is generally safe to raise and if you feel hypo and not experiencing negative/intolerance symptoms, I would raise. For iron, you need to be taking Solgar Gentle Iron or Bluebonnet. It's cheap at www.iherb.com or a health food store may carry it. You need 6 to 8 a day to get iron up. This kind of iron has GRAS standing (it's not toxic) and it doesn't cause bowel issues for most people, so no worries, there! Iodoral -- just do not take it while you're on the t3 protocol! It DOES stimulate t4 production, that is the main reason we need iodine in the first place. Your body needs iodine to make thyroid hormones and you're taking thyroid homrones, so what would you need it for? I think the iodine thing is a fad. Yeah, maybe our breasts need it, I don't know, but certainly not in the amount in Iodoral. And yes, it does displace the toxic halogens in our environment, but again, that's really an issue when the halogens are filling up the spots that idoine should be going to so it can make thyroid hormones. But you're taking thyroid hormone and thryoid hormone IS iodine so you're really taking all the iodine you need. Understand? I have seen NO compelling research as to why we need all that iodine. The places that have very high iodine intake also have the highest rates of Hashi's in the world. So if you have Hashi's, Iodine will most likely flare it. I've written this before, but iodine has been well researched for a long time due to countries/areas having serious deficiency with serious problems, hence government mandated iodization programs. So we DO know how much iodine the body needs and it is NOT 12.5 or 50 mg! It is more like 150 mcg. Every government knows that when they institute an iodization program, SOME peopel will go hyper. And that is on the tiny amounts they put in the salt or oil or whatever they put it into. So I really think taking these huge doses of iodine is ridiculous and there is scientific reason to take it. The iodine proponents will tell you if you feel bad from taking iodine, it is detox. Well, how interesting that detox symptoms are the same exact symptoms of hypoT! Okay, enough of my rant... I know in some parts of the country, the soil is depleted (like the Midwest). So if you don't eat any processed foods and you're not eating regular salt (which I hope you're not), than if you feel you must take iodine (which I don't think you need), just stick to the tiny amount that's in most multis, like 100 to 150 mcg. I seriously doubt that tiny amount will hurt you but would give you enough so you're not deficient in case our bodies need iodine for anything other than making thyroid hormones. Also, for what it's worth, I use Redmond's Sea Salt, and that has 10% the RDA of iodine in each 1/4 teaspoon, so I figure I get plenty of iodine between that and whatever is in my food. And finally, you can always get a lab done to check your iodine levels. I think you can just get a serum blood value. That should dispell any worries you may have if you are deficient. :-) Kathleen > > > > > > > > > > I was hoping someone could help me out here... > > > > > I just started taking cytomel this last Saturday for my RT3 issues. Guest guest
Kathleen Thank you, man, FANTASTIC information there from you. And no, I don't use table salt. I'm hooked on sea salt. Prefer the complexity of tastes in it so much. I'm a pretty big health freak....grow all my own veggies...over 40 varieties of heirloom tomatoes to start! If they'd EVER turn red! So...today, I cut out the iodine. I will stick to the T3 protocol and see how that goes, and intend to tomorrow add another 1/4 pill of the cytomel. So, if I'm hearing you, I ought to crank it up when temps are stable? Mine have been running at 95 degrees or so, with a high of 96.2...so...... Sadly, today for some reason my hair loss really cranked up. Even my scalp at the part is sore as all get out like I bumped the top of my head on something. I was reading some of Sage's posts about estrogen, and her belief that she was LOW estrogen after a talk with Val. In January last year, I had cystic hyperplasia diagnosed after a period that lasted over 40 days (yes, this was a lot of fun, and a lot of scariness when my obgyn mentioned the cancer word....ughh....) and she'd said it was low progesterone, but I've always gotten menstrual migraines when the estrogen dropped pre-periods. So...NOW I'm wondering if I have LOW estrogen instead of estrogen dominance like the doc. said, and that whenever I stop my BiEst creme (as of three days ago) and start the progesterone creme, I get MORE hair fall out, and the RT3 issues just aggravate the whole deal. Does anyone else ever have this sort of thing? Thanks so much again.....I will get that iron, for sure. I canno' handle the side effects any longer. Yuck. Guest guest
I found that when my thyroid was too low, even though the doctors said it was high, I was losing hair all over the place. Once it was discovered I had RT3 and switched to T3 only, the hair slowly stopped falling out. I have my fingers crossed because I think it might be coming back. The last time I was tested the RT3 was <25, so I seem to have cleared. <>Roni Immortality exists! It's called knowledge! Just because something isn't seen doesn't mean it's not there<> Subject: Re: Help! First few days on cytomel....what is going on?To: RT3_T3 Date: Friday, August 27, 2010, 9:36 PM KathleenThank you, man, FANTASTIC information there from you. Mine have been running at 95 degrees or so, with a high of 96.2...so......Sadly, today for some reason my hair loss really cranked up. So...NOW I'm wondering if I have LOW estrogen instead of estrogen dominance like the doc. said, and that whenever I stop my BiEst creme (as of three days ago) and start the progesterone creme, I get MORE hair fall out, and the RT3 issues just aggravate the whole deal.Does anyone else ever have this sort of thing? Thanks so much again.....I will get that iron, for sure. I canno' handle the side effects any longer. Guest guest
" So...NOW I'm wondering if I have LOW estrogen instead of estrogen dominance like the doc said, and that whenever I stop my BiEst creme (as of three days ago) and start the progesterone creme, I get MORE hair fall out, and the RT3 issues just aggravate the whole deal. " Note you can have BOTH Estrogen Dominance AND low Estrogen. Low Estrogen is determined by your actual Estrogen level (testing Day 21 for cycling females). You can also test LH, FSH & Estrogens on Day 3 to see if low at that time of cycle as well. Estrogen DOMINANCE is determined by ratio of Progesterone & Estrogen. It's explained more here http://forums.realthyroidhelp.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=13646 In fact you can have BOTH Estrogen & progesterone low/deficient and STILL have Estrogen Dominance. To put it another way Dominance is about the relative levels/balance between Estrogen/Progesterone. I was low on everything but was already Perimenopausal and am now Postmenopausal. Steroid meds for Adrenals Cortisl HRT also greatly lowers Androgens (DHEA, Testosterone) especially for peri, Postmenos & those who are Secondary AI (low ACTH). That's because steroid meds further lowers ACTH. I am secondary & my Androgens went to NIL after steroid meds. Of course Adrenals after menopause are also the source of progesterone & estrogens! My hair went coarse, frizzy, broke easily, and thinned out a lot. No longer the case but I had to cut it short to get rid of damaged hair. Interestingly it is now wavy/curly after being straight my entire life!!!! I never had low Iron problems as I have Hemochromatosis (in fact I lowered Iron with phlebs) so it was definitely hormones (probably other nutrients apart from Iron) for me. Guest guest
Lethal Lee, Hm...interesting. This is the first time anyone has told me I could have both estrogen dominance and low estrogen. Seems so obvious while also being so counter-intuitive, you know? I had my estradiol tested last month, but perhaps this isn't enough for a knowledge base and I should find out more, ay? As I too am peri, I'm wondering how to predict when to get the test. My periods are all over the map. I'm afraid to crank up the bi-est, with all potential side effects, but it may be the only thing helping my hair! How does one know when to go get the rest of the testing if one cannot predict one's monthlies? My mom breeeezed through all of this, still has a giant head of Chickasaw hair at 70 years old. Cripes. My hair too started out by breaking, getting frizzy, and I too had the long straight black Indian hair that I could barely fit into a towel after washing it. Just two years ago! Now, it's frizzy, broken, etc.... And so much of it just tangles. I know, I've thought about hacking it all into a 1920s bob style again (circa high school days) but just can't bring myself to do it. So, what tests have folks done and where, on the cheap, can one do them? Kaiser has refused to test ANY of my hormones, (although they were head up to rip out my uterus....without testing ANYthing....) and so I have to pay out of pocket for all testing now. Thanks to any and all who have written back. It really helps. I've felt in such a quandary. I've never been told I'm hypo. at all by anyone, just this reverse t3 thing, and low free t3, but everything else seems to work. So, never having taken a thyroid med. before, there's a lot to learn. I'm anxious to get my adrenal testing back, hopefully some time this coming week. Guest guest
Because I had to go off Armour when they changed it, and because it took way too long to find and treat the RT3 I had, my hair, which has always been straight also was falling out and turned super fine and frizzy. Now that I'm more normal with the T3 that I'm on, the hair is getting better. <>Roni Immortality exists! It's called knowledge!
