Hi all! I am very excited I finally got my iron panel results. I tested

yesterday. My ferritin I tested on 7/17

Can you please tell me what these iron labs mean???

Iron Binding Capacity (TBIC) 280 ug/ dL range: 250 - 450

UIBC 187 ug/ dL range: 150 - 375

Iron, Serum 93 ug/ dL range: 35 - 155

Iron Saturation 33 % range: 15 - 55

Ferritin 15 range: 10 - 291

Magnesium 2.4 range 1.3 - 2.7

The Ferritin number I understand. The iron numbers I don't :)

I know I need to take elemental iron and get my ferritin up to between 50 -70.

I started with 90 mg last night of slow fe iron.

what is suggested how to increase?

Thank you!!!!

Hi : the most recent info I have from Moderator Val is that the %

saturation should be 35-45 for best thyroid utilization.

Recommendation for raising iron:

" for Iron Blue Bonnet Bisglycinate seems to be the best tolerated with 150-200mg

a day needed to raise ferritin levels. "

From Val's post

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RT3_T3/message/33134

We have also had good reports on Solgar Gentle Iron.

Here's a link to the bluebonnet iron:

http://www.iherb.com/Bluebonnet-Nutrition-Chelated-Iron-90-Vcaps/11571?at=0

Taking iron in two separate doses helps absorption (I understand the body can

only absorb so much iron at one time). Also taking iron at the same time

vitamin C helps absorption.

You may already know this, but it's important to avoid all iron supplements for

five days prior to an iron test. Otherwise the results could be falsely high.

Hope this helps.

PS. on raising iron: TAPER UP to the recommended dose of 150-200 mg/day. I had

better results tapering up to that dose, over about two weeks. I think that

suddenly starting on a lot of iron may sometimes cause digestive upset.

Whenever I stop iron for five days prior to a test, afterwards I taper up again,

a little more rapidly than when I was starting from scratch, maybe over the

course of a week. Just trying to be real easy on the innards!

Hi Margery, thanks so much (AND ANYONE ELSE THAT CAN EXPLAIN WHAT THESE LABS

MEAN IN RELATION TO EACH OTHER / LOW FERRITIN OF 15)

>> the most recent info I have from Moderator Val is that the % saturation

should be 35-45 for best thyroid utilization.

so at 33 % i'm not that bad off ...

what does this mean in relation to the low ferritin of 15 is what I am really

wanting to know about?? and also the rest of these things (UBIC, serum, and

TBIC) what do they mean in relation to the ferritin???

just in case, if it does anything here are my labs again...

Iron Binding Capacity (TBIC) 280 ug/ dL range: 250 - 450

UIBC 187 ug/ dL range: 150 - 375

Iron, Serum 93 ug/ dL range: 35 - 155

Iron Saturation 33 % range: 15 - 55

Ferritin 15 range: 10 - 291

Magnesium 2.4 range 1.3 - 2.7

>>> PS. on raising iron: TAPER UP to the recommended dose of 150-200 mg/day.

thanks, yes this is my plan :)

>>> I had better results tapering up to that dose, over about two weeks.

this is great info.!! thanks 2 weeks is awesome to know, as a marker.

>>> I think that suddenly starting on a lot of iron may sometimes cause

digestive upset.

so far after 3 days at 90 mg, it's just been constipation.. but i also just quit

smoking less than two weeks ago and that happens then too... and i take flax

seed and psyllium husk

>

> > We have also had good reports on Solgar Gentle Iron.

thanks that's good to know!~~ i actually looked at them first about a month

ago, and i could not tell if it was elemental iron or not, so i got the slow fe

instead... and i know about the bluebonnet as well from these groups and sttm

thanks, this is good to know WHY i need to take it in two separate doses,

otherwise i would have taken it all at once.

Also taking iron at the same time vitamin C helps absorption.

Hi : Val knows more about the other iron labs than I do, and particularly

what they mean in relation to each other. May I suggest you re-post your

question with a BUMP TO VAL in the subject? I usually don't suggest this, but

I've reached the limit of my iron knowledge here.

Your % saturation is actually better than my own, but that your ferritin is so

low doesn't look so good to me. So I do think this question is one for Val.
