Guest guest
hi darleen i'm gabi, 38, former SU - i'm sorry about your bad experiences with drs - i hope you can find a good OB or reproductive endocrinologist that can give you the right diagnosis and operate on you if that's recommended - i didn't have a vaginal septum, just a uterine one but i was misdiagnosed when i was about 28 years old and the dr told me i had a BU (bicornuate) and not to worry about it - i did not worry and i was was EXTRA lucky and had my first (and only so far) son at 34 in 2001 - he was born at 33 weeks because i had a placental abruption - after a c/sec and a scary 3 week stay at the hospital we were back home and he just turned 4 last july - in 6/04 and 1/05 i had 2 miscarriages (mc) - the 1st one was attributed to my age (37 at the time) and drs didn't investigate any further - with the 2nd one i pushed to get some answers - my husband and i and the baby boy we lost at 10 weeks were tested and we all seemed to be chromosomally normal - i then was diagnosed with a MTHFR mutation, a blood clotting disorder and a BU or SU - i had a HSG (hysterosalpingogram - like an x-ray with a dye injected into the uterus) in 2/05 and a laparoscopy/hysteroscopy in 3/05 - my RE (reproductive endocrinologist) resected me right then and there b/c i turned out to have a SU (septate uterus, partial septum). after the HSG my RE had suggested me to have a MRI but by then i had already read a lot in this group and knew that the gold standard for diagnosing a BU or SU was the lap/hyst so i went straight to surgery - the surgery you mention is the laparoscopy which allows the RE to see the outside of the uterus - they make one incision on your belly button and one on your pubic bone and they insert a tiny camera and gas to distend your abdomen and separate the organs inside to get a clear view of the outside of your uterus - if it's smooth, if id DOES NOT have a dip then you're not BU - then the hysteroscopy follows: the insert a tiny camera through your vagina/cervix and look at the uterus from the inside - if there's a septum (an internal wall, either partial or total), depending in its characteristics the dr can make a resection: cut it so your uterus is like a normal one on the inside too - most septums that can be resected are NON vascular and fibrous so they're not good for a baby to implant cause sooner or later the blood supply will be insufficient to keep an embryo growing - some people have a combination of anomalies i.e. BU (outside dip) + SU (inside septum) - every case is different and that's why i think th emost important thing is to try to get a RE or OB who has experience with MAs - please take a look at the FILES or DATABASE section of this website - there are lists of drs there - and you can always post a question and maybe you'll get recommendations from women who live close to where you are ..... the peri you saw seems to know about MAs but i don;t think s/he will do your surgery - will s/he? the MRI is inconclusive sometimes and some women here have been misDx with that tool so i think the lap/hyst is your best bet for an accurate Dx and hopefully a solution - before your appt try to take a look at the FILES in this website - there are plenty of questions to be asked and tons of info on BU/SU .... if you want please email me directly and i'll send you my account of my 1st surgery (the lap/hyst) - i was TERRIFIED before it but my experience was great as for loosing weight i should loose 30 lbs at least myself but i'm being lazy .... the only suggestion i have is to give a try to weight watchers - i was successful with it in the past when i was a little more motivated than i am now ..... i hope i've been of some help good luck! gabi
Guest guest
Gabi ~ Thanks so much for responding and the info. There is so much info here, it is really mind blowing. I will definately check out the files and database section here. I was refered to a high risk doctor for one visit and she told me that I wouldnt see her again until i get pregnant. I feel like there isnt anyone who really knows a whole lot about this in my area and dont trust as much as i would like too. I guess that will come with my journey ahead and building a relationship with my new doctors. I am currently going to a a specialist and traveling about 1 hour from my home to see her. I feel like I have just been waiting to figure out what I have! Maybe I am looking for support prematurely but I have only talked to one other person in my area with MAs. She has only 1 kidney but it is larger to compensate but she has never been able to have children. It is so nice to read all about you wonderful and brave women and not be alone. Thanks for your info, it is really helpful. Hopefully I will know more about my situation after 01/13 and with your help, i will bring some info and have more questions to ask. Thanks again! Guest guest
Darleen, Welcome to the board. I read your post and just wanted to send a hug and let you know there are plenty of us on the boards who are hear to lean on, talk to, and learn from. When I found this site I was so relieved and overwhelmed by the ammount of information I needed to digest. My advice to you is to find a dr. with some experience with MAs, (not an easy task I know!) and a dr. you feel comfortable with. It is your body and your goal I imagine is to become a mom, trust your instincts as you make the journey!~ I am an SU, going for a preop consult on 1.10 for SU resection surgery (also referred to as metroplasty). I was misdiagnosed about 3 years ago with a UD - two separate uteri - but found out after a 3d ultrasound that I am SU. Wishing happiness and sending hugs, > > > > hi darleen > > > > i'm gabi, 38, former SU - i'm sorry about your bad experiences with > > drs - i hope you can find a good OB or reproductive endocrinologist > > that can give you the right diagnosis and operate on you if that's > > recommended - > > > > i didn't have a vaginal septum, just a uterine one but i was > > misdiagnosed when i was about 28 years old and the dr told me i had > > a BU (bicornuate) and not to worry about it - > > > > i did not worry and i was was EXTRA lucky and had my first (and > only > > so far) son at 34 in 2001 - he was born at 33 weeks because i had a > > placental abruption - after a c/sec and a scary 3 week stay at the > > hospital we were back home and he just turned 4 last july - > > > > in 6/04 and 1/05 i had 2 miscarriages (mc) - the 1st one was > > attributed to my age (37 at the time) and drs didn't investigate > any > > further - with the 2nd one i pushed to get some answers - my > husband > > and i and the baby boy we lost at 10 weeks were tested and we all > > seemed to be chromosomally normal - i then was diagnosed with a > > MTHFR mutation, a blood clotting disorder and a BU or SU - > > > > i had a HSG (hysterosalpingogram - like an x-ray with a dye > injected > > into the uterus) in 2/05 and a laparoscopy/hysteroscopy in 3/05 - > my > > RE (reproductive endocrinologist) resected me right then and there > > b/c i turned out to have a SU (septate uterus, partial septum). > > > > after the HSG my RE had suggested me to have a MRI but by then i > had > > already read a lot in this group and knew that the gold standard > for > > diagnosing a BU or SU was the lap/hyst so i went straight to > > surgery - > > > > the surgery you mention is the laparoscopy which allows the RE to > > see the outside of the uterus - they make one incision on your > belly > > button and one on your pubic bone and they insert a tiny camera and > > gas to distend your abdomen and separate the organs inside to get a > > clear view of the outside of your uterus - if it's smooth, if id > > DOES NOT have a dip then you're not BU - then the hysteroscopy > > follows: the insert a tiny camera through your vagina/cervix and > > look at the uterus from the inside - if there's a septum (an > > internal wall, either partial or total), depending in its > > characteristics the dr can make a resection: cut it so your uterus > > is like a normal one on the inside too - > > > > most septums that can be resected are NON vascular and fibrous so > > they're not good for a baby to implant cause sooner or later the > > blood supply will be insufficient to keep an embryo growing - > > > > some people have a combination of anomalies i.e. BU (outside dip) + > > SU (inside septum) - every case is different and that's why i think > > th emost important thing is to try to get a RE or OB who has > > experience with MAs - > > > > please take a look at the FILES or DATABASE section of this > website - > > there are lists of drs there - and you can always post a question > > and maybe you'll get recommendations from women who live close to > > where you are ..... > > > > the peri you saw seems to know about MAs but i don;t think s/he > will > > do your surgery - will s/he? > > > > the MRI is inconclusive sometimes and some women here have been > > misDx with that tool so i think the lap/hyst is your best bet for > an > > accurate Dx and hopefully a solution - > > > > before your appt try to take a look at the FILES in this website - > > there are plenty of questions to be asked and tons of info on > > BU/SU .... > > > > if you want please email me directly and i'll send you my account > of > > my 1st surgery (the lap/hyst) - i was TERRIFIED before it but my > > experience was great > > > > as for loosing weight i should loose 30 lbs at least myself but > > i'm being lazy .... the only suggestion i have is to give a try to > > weight watchers - i was successful with it in the past when i was a > > little more motivated than i am now ..... > > > > i hope i've been of some help > > good luck! > > gabi > > >
