Guest guest
It may well be both an increase in iron stores AND another reason, such as infection. It usually takes a lot longer to really increase iron. Other factors can falsely raise ferritin, too, such as inflammation. Since ferritin can be falsely elevated, we now recommend an additional iron test, " an iron panel " with a result showing % saturation. For best thyroid utilization, % saturation should be 35-45. I do not know how long after an infection ferritin returns to normal. It probably varies widely, depending on type and duration of infection. Here's a link to more info, for this specific subject, look for the paragraph titled " What if I find my ferritin is higher than it should be? " http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ferritin/ > > My ferritin jumped from 39 to 168 in 6 weeks! I was supplementing iron aggressively(200 mg a day) and eating a lot of red meat and taking T3. Could it be possible that this represents an increase in iron stores--or an infection? If it's an infection, once the illness is past, how long does it take for the ferritin to drift downward to a 'real' level? > Whitmore >
