Guest guest
Heidi, I wouldn't worry too much about loud sounds. They can definitely disturb the baby and cause him to stir, but not out of discomfort. A rule of thumb I used when pregnant was that if the noise bothered me, then it could MAYBE be loud enough to bother baby. Everything is so muffled to them, all they really hear are low bass notes and tones. I've also read that it may not be the best idea to use those belly headphones for the baby to listen to music because parents are often waking their little one up in utero to make them listen to Bach or whatever. But then I saw something that said if a baby is asleep in there, there is virtually nothing that will rouse them. When I was pregnant with Fletcher, I was commuting three hours a day and listened to plenty of music, and I wasn't shy about the volume. Sometimes it would be loud and he wouldn't move at all, other times he would go nuts in there with no noise at all. He would move around the most when I was singing along to my tunes (your voice is the easiest thing for your little one to hear) or listening to Barry White (the low notes carried well :-) Don't worry, you haven't done anything wrong to your baby! But in the future, if you feel uncomfortable in any situation, you may as well remove yourself from it if you want to. There is a discovery channel special that follows the duration of a pregnancy, fetal development, etc., and it had a good section on music and sounds. Maybe you could find it at your library. BTW...I delivered Fletcher at 24w5d...and in his 2 weeks in the NICU, he would recognize and respond to my voice and my husband's. No one else, not the nurses, grandparents. He knew our voices from his 5 months in utero. I just wanted to share that with you since you're at that same point. It was amazing how he would respond to us. Guest guest
, Thank you so much for your reassuring email! It does seem like common sense that if something bothers me, it could potentially bother baby. I hope he just got tired and fell asleep. I have been very sensitive to noise past few weeks. How incredible and amazing that your baby recognized your voices exclusively already at 24 weeks! Very best wishes to you and thanks again for reassuring me!
