Guest guest
FYI i sent this to Gabi in response to her question about menstral cycle length being affected by plant estrogens (i.e. soy, hummus, ...) Gabi, -I would definitely talk to your doctor about other (non-soy) sources of your menstral cycle delay which could be far more meaningful- The evidence is generally quite negative for significant effects of isoflavones (plant estrogens) on menstrual cycle length (see below, only two studies are positive and they increased cycle length by only a few days). and better to be safe than sorry, i would also encourage all people undergoing fertility treatment to avoid Pueraria mirifica, a Thai herb containing phytoestrogens, may act as estrogen and disturb reproduction-- in general i would avoid all those natural things they sell in whole foods stores that claim to increase fertility etc- they are not scientifically studied and may have negative effects. Brown et al Nutr Cancer. 2002;43(1):22-30. The soy diet slightly increased menstrual cycle length by 1.8 +/- 0.7 days (P = 0.088) Kurzer MS et al J Nutr. 2002 Mar;132(3):570S-573S. Hormonal effects of soy in premenopausal women and men. ....These studies provided 32-200 mg/d of isoflavones and generally showed decreased midcycle plasma gonadotropins and **trends** toward increased menstrual cycle length and decreased blood concentrations of estradiol, progesterone and sex hormone-binding globulin. [GABI: " TREND " MEANS NOT STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT FINDINGS] Maskarinec G et al Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev. 2002 Feb;11(2):195-201. .... Menstrual cycle length did not change significantly during the [isolflavone dietary] trial .... Lu et al Cancer Res. 2000 Aug 1;60(15):4112-21. Decreased ovarian hormones during a soya diet: implications for breast cancer prevention. ....Mean menstrual cycle length did NOT change during the soya diet; a slight decrease in mean luteal cycle length was marginally statistically significant (P = 0.06). i MC et al. Nutr Cancer. 1999;34(2):133-9. Effects of soy intake on sex hormone metabolism in premenopausal women. ....NO significant differences were observed in serum estrone, estradiol, sex hormone-binding globulin, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, prolactin, or progesterone concentrations with soy feeding in the non-OC or the OC group. ***No changes in menstrual cycle length or the urinary estrogen metabolite ratio of 2-hydroxyestrone to 16 alpha-hydroxyestrone were seen with soy feeding in the non-OC or the OC group.*** Nagata C et al J Natl Cancer Inst. 1998 Dec 2;90(23):1830-5. ..... In the soymilk-supplemented group, menstrual cycle length was increased by nearly 2 days, and, in the control group, it was decreased by approximately 1 day, a difference that was NOT statistically significant. Cassidy A et al Br J Nutr. 1995 Oct;74(4):587-601. Biological effects of isoflavones in young women: importance of the chemical composition of soyabean products. .... The increase in menstrual cycle length did NOT reach statistical significance in the three three subject who ate 50 g miso/d, but peak progesterone levels were significantly (P < 0.05) delayed. Mid-cycle peaks of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) were suppressed with 45 mg conjugated isoflavones as 60 g TVP (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01 respectively). Cassidy A et al Am J Clin Nutr. 1994 Sep;60(3):333-40. Biological effects of a diet of soy protein rich in isoflavones on the menstrual cycle of premenopausal women. ...Soy protein (60 g containing 45 mg isoflavones) given daily for 1 mo **significantly (P < 0.01) increased*** follicular phase length and/or *delayed menstruation.* Midcycle surges of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone were significantly suppressed during dietary intervention with soy protein. Plasma estradiol concentrations increased in the follicular phase and cholesterol concentrations decreased 9.6%. ... NOTE THIS IS PROBABLY ONLY BY A FEW DAYS- AND ALSO IS THE OLDEST STUDY OUT THERE SO PROBABLY THE WEAKEST METHODS OF ALL THE STUIDES OUT THERE --- MullerianAnomalies wrote: > > We would like to remind you of this upcoming event. > > Weekly MA Chat > > Date: Wednesday, October 19, 2005 > Time: 7:00PM CDT (GMT-05:00) > > Let's talk! :-) > > Join the weekly MA chat at 00:00, GMT (7:00 Central > Standard > Time), at > http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MullerianAnomalies/chat/ > > A secondary meeting time happens at 01:00, GMT, or > 8:00 Central > Standard Time. > > > > >
